Solihull Moors are closing in on a deal to land their first summer signing, following a frustrating 2025/26 campaign in the National League.

Chris Millington’s side underwent a strong run of form towards the end of 2025, but a winless run of ten matches saw their play-off aspirations quickly transform into a possible relegation battle.

Fortunately, the club steered themselves away from danger with key wins against Altrincham, Boreham Wood and Yeovil Town saw Solihull finish the campaign in 14th-place, just three points off a top half finish.

With their retained list now confirmed, attention can turn onto the 2026/27 campaign – with the club yet to announce a single summer acquisition (yet).

Unlike some National League clubs, Solihull only said goodbye to six players after their deals came to an end, with only one of them being a regular starter (Alex Whitmore).

However, with their loanees having also returned to their parent clubs, it has left the Moors short in defensive numbers with the likes of Lewis Baines (Altrincham) and Dan Cox (Derby) having departed.

Fortunately for Moors fans, it appears as though their first summer signing is set to address some of those defensive departures.

As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke, Solihull Moors are closing in on a deal to sign defender Matty Carson, following his departure from fellow National League outfit Boston United.

The 23-year-old managed seven goal contributions for Paul Hurst’s side last season, but was let go after his deal came to an end.

Carson is a left-back, which means his arrival could cast doubt on the future of last season’s starter Cameron Green, who was replaced by the former at the start of last season.

What does this signing potentially tell us about Solihull’s aims for next season?

Solihull were on a run of two play-off finals and an FA Trophy final in the space of three season’s, but frustration over the last two campaigns has saw that run transform into bottom half finishes.

The club ended the campaign with just two defeats in their final eight matches and scored 71 goals across their 46 league games, but their issue was keeping the ball out of the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Laurie Walker kept 12 clean sheets in the National League last season, meaning across their other 34 games – they conceded 72 times, which was a rate of 2.12 per game.

The fact Solihull’s first potential signing is a defender, initially suggests that Millington is attempting to tighten up their defensive line – thus meaning that less goals would be conceded and therefore more points behind gained.

Similarly, Carson managed more assists than Green last season, which could imply that whilst the defensive stability is important – the club may also be looking for better attacking outputs from their full-backs moving forward.

Therefore, the signing of Carson could imply that Solihull are aiming to be stronger defensively next season whilst also attempting to make better use of the ball in wide areas.
