Former Welsh international Jonny Williams has been given an opportunity to earn a deal at Swindon Town after featuring in their pre-season friendly defeat against Bristol City on Saturday.
The 32-year-old is on the lookout for a new club after being released by Gillingham at the end of last season. He began the summer with the PFA free agent squad, where he impressed in friendlies against Leicester City and Barnet.
This has led to a chance to rejoin former club Swindon. The midfielder enjoyed a successful spell at the County Ground between 2021 and 2023, making 84 appearances in all competitions.

Williams Set For Second Chance After Bristol City Outing
Williams was a shock inclusion in Ian Holloway’s squad on Saturday when he played the final 30 minutes in a 3-1 defeat against Bristol City. The Robins are next in action tomorrow night against League One outfit Leyton Orient where the ex-Charlton Athletic man could feature.
The situation has been discussed by manager Ian Holloway, who told The Swindon Advertiser:
“There might be a possibility, and that is down to him. We have got another game on Tuesday, so he might get more in that one.”
Williams wasn’t the only trialist on show at the weekend. Australian defender Kaelan Majekodunmi also featured after impressing during training throughout the summer. Asked whether a deal is on the cards, Holloway said:
“He has done very well, the big Aussie, very well, so we will see. There is no rush on him at the moment, so no comment [on whether he will be back on Tuesday].”
Next Few Weeks Pivotal For Swindon
Swindon will feel that the next few weeks are key as we count down to the new campaign. Disappointment remains among supporters after last season’s heartbreak, where a dreadful finish saw them miss out on a place in the play-offs.
Their preparations have been far from ideal as injuries have continued to mount throughout the squad. A further four were forced off on Saturday, whilst it has been confirmed this afternoon that defender Joel McGregor is the latest to head to the treatment room after picking up an ankle injury in training.
This has left Holloway down to just 14 senior players ahead of tomorrow night’s visit of Orient and it feels like a busy few weeks is on the horizon. Much of their transfer activity will depend on the severity of some of those that are currently out of action, but it does feel like the Wiltshire-based club are on the back foot somewhat.
