Burton Albion have reportedly handed free agent Kyle Vassell a trial stint as they search for new striker options this summer.
The Brewers are on the lookout for extra bodies up front in the wake of their sale of Jake Beesley to Bradford City, and have already secured a new option in the form of Gbemi Arubi, who was signed from Dundalk amid interest from Huddersfield Town.
Millers Boss Confirms Burton Albion Chance
One of those options being considered is Kyle Vassell, who is on the lookout for a new club following his move back to England after a spell in America with Colorado Springs Switchbacks.
He had previously spent some time at one of his former clubs in Rotherham United in pre-season, and according to Alex Bruce, could still be a target the Millers pursue.
Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser about the 33-year-old and the possibility of him returning to South Yorkshire, Bruce stated:
“Kyle is one that we had a look at. He’s gone back to work with the PFA. He’s on trial at Burton now. He’s someone that we know all about. He’s one of our options, but we’re actively looking everywhere at the moment.
“I’m assessing my options. I want to put them all in a bowl, and then we’ll try and pick the right ones.”
Albion have several senior options on their books heading into the season opener against Blackburn Rovers, with Fabio Tavares, Tyrese Shade and the returning Millar Matthews-Lewis available on top of summer recruit Arubi.
Should Burton Sign Vassell?
With Rotherham United boss Alex Bruce confirming that Kyle Vassell is on trial at Burton Albion, it throws an intriguing prospect as to what kind of striker Gary Bowyer is looking for this summer.
Having already tied up a new option in Gbemi Arubi midway through the League of Ireland season, they have secured a poacher in the box, but now it seems that Burton are looking for a true Jake Beesley replacement.
Having found plenty of success from aerial situations last season with the 29-year-old, finding someone who can replicate his prowess could be key to avoiding relegation once more, and Vassell could be that.
During his previous spell at Kilmarnock, he was one of the best-performing strikers in the Scottish Premiership for aerial duels one, and while he failed to score using his head, he was able to frequently beat his man wih an average of 3.74 won per 90.
Millar Matthews-Lewis may be loaned out once more following his brief spell at Yeovil Town, and in order to provide a different profile from his other options, then signing a veteran like Vassell may not be the worst of ideas for Albion.
