Sheffield United are taking steps toward making a move to sign former midfielder Hamza Choudhury as Chris Wilder looks to add final options to his squad.
The Blades are under a self-imposed restriction on their incoming business between now and the end of Deadline Day, with the focus on signing players on loan or on free transfers amid their off-field financial worries.
Foxes Could Lose Another Star
United could now make a move to add further strength at both full-back and midfield, with Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke now revealing that they are ‘lining up a move’ to sign Leicester City‘s Hamza Choudhury.
It is not the first time that Wilder has eyed one of his former players who are currently plying their trade with Leicester, having pressed forward with several bids for Harry Souttar before pulling the plug on that deal earlier last week.
The 28-year-old was absent from Russell Martin’s squads that faced both Ipswich Town and MK Dons, with the former Southampton boss revealing that he would not be selected, alongside Wout Faes and Stephy Mavididi, due to interest from elsewhere.
Derby County have been heavily linked with a switch for Choudhury, with reports from the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath suggesting that he could make the move across the East Midlands to Pride Park.
The midfielder played 19 times on loan at Bramall Lane in 2025, assisting the club to reach the Championship play-off final before they came unstuck at Wembley against Sunderland.
Uphill Battle For Blades
While they may have somewhat of an advantage having previously hosted Hamza Choudhury on loan, the financial restrictions the club now face for the remainder of this window means that Sheffield United will have a lot of work to do to sign this latest target.
His versatility at both right-back and holding midfielder makes him a very useful player to have in any team’s ranks, and with Chris Wilder more willing to experiment with his formation as of late, Choudhury could be a shrewd deal to make, especially when it comes to rotation for key players like Femi Seriki or Joe Rothwell.
However, with Derby County already on the hunt for Choudhury’s signature, and with the Rams able to spend fees, then it will take a huge effort for United to convince Leicester that they are the right destination and submit a suitable offer, most likely as a loan.
With Russell Martin already content to leave him out of squads for the foreseeable future, getting him, as well as other transfer-targeted players, off the books may be key as part of his rebuild, and therefore, if Derby fail to deliver, then Sheffield United could be beneficiaries and secure a late deadline-day move for the 28-year-old.
