Sheffield Wednesday co-owner David Storch has admitted there was some confusion on his part as to what the EFL restrictions were.
After Storch, his son Michael and Tom Costin took over the Owls through Arise Capital Partners, it was widely expected there would be restrictions on the club.
The Owls entered into administration last October after years of poor financial management from their former owner came to a head.
Storch’s team managed to save the club from a -15 start this season, and as David admitted himself, he thought the club would be able to buy players, as long as sales were made. Unfortunately, that’s not been the case this summer.
EFL Restrictions “More Onerous” Than Thought
Speaking to Bloomberg, Storch explained that it was his belief any player sales could then be reinvested into the playing squad. As the club have found out, that’s not been the case. The Chicago-based businessman told the American website:
“I agreed to terms which turned out to be more onerous than I thought.”
Wednesday sold their biggest player asset early in the window. Young keeper Pierce Charles left for Man City for a reported £3millon plus add-ons.
If the restrictions were as first thought, the club could have reinvested that money back into the playing squad. Instead, they’re now left searching the free and loan market after spending all the £2million budget allowed.
Who Have Sheffield Wednesday Brought in?
The club, as expected, have been extremely busy in the window. They’ve brought in 16 new players, including four players for undisclosed fees, such as promising players Louie Barry and Sil Swinkels.
Those two signings came early on and left many Wednesday fans excited about what was to come. Since the Barry signing, though, the club have signed frees and loans.
Some free transfer work has been impressive. Callum Slattery and Billy Mitchell have come to the side when they could’ve arguably gone to the Championship.
However, other free transfers have been smart business but underwhelming, suggesting the budget for signings is running dry — is that because of the early transfer work under the initial confusion?
Will Wednesday Sign Any More Players?
It’s expected the club will sign more players before the transfer window closes on September 1st at 11pm.
Speaking to The Star about a meeting he and his recruitment team had during the week, Henrik Pedersen said:
“The outcome is that we are looking at the squad we have now and see how many players who can play one or two positions, and where do we want to upgrade the team. We are working to see what is in the market and to see if we can make our team stronger with some addition.”
One player they seem unlikely to sign, no matter how much Wednesday fans want it to happen, is Jamie Vardy. It was confirmed that the EFL had rejected a proposal the club had put together to offer the former England striker.
