Leicester City have allowed young midfielder Michael Golding to join League Two side Shrewsbury Town on loan.
The 20-year-old has been stuck on the fringes of the Foxes squad since his arrival from Chelsea in 2024, and spent last season in their Under-21s squad, with their Premier League 2 campaign ending in the Round of 16 playoff phase.
Shrews Seal Loan Deal
However, despite wholesale changes in the City lineup as a result of their relegation to League One, Golding has been unable to make his mark and break through into the first team under Russell Martin.
Reports earlier today from the Shropshire Star revealed that Shrewsbury Town were engaged in talks overnight to sign the midfielder, who has already featured in the National League Cup for Leicester this season.
Now, in an update from Luke Powell, it has been confirmed that the two sides have struck an agreement to send Golding to the New Meadow, becoming Gavin Cowan’s ninth signing of the season.
It comes after Salop mutually agreed to end midfielder Sam Clucas’ contract a year early, with the veteran now on trial at League One side Bradford City, who poached another Foxes midfielder this window in the form of Harvey Cartwright.
Leicester are continuing to try and add further options in the middle of the pitch, with conflicting reports as to whether they have launched an effort to sign Stockport County‘s Jack Diamond.
Promising But Risky Deal
Shrewsbury Town have been proactive in their efforts to try and improve under Gavin Cowan, and are now taking a further step in adding depth with a loan deal to sign Michael Golding.
Having finally reached the point where he is ready for his first loan spell away from the King Power, the midfielder has now earned himself a spot in the first-team plans in Shropshire, but will face plenty of competition to try and make himself a regular starter.
Town have their own rising star breaking through in the middle of the pitch, with 17-year-old Will Gray being a favourite of Cowan in the final months of last season and striking a partnership with Tom Sang.
With Jay Turner-Cooke and Jack Price also brought in this window, Golding is up against it to prove he is deserving of a start, but should nevertheless be a regular feature of the Shrewsbury squad over the course of the season.
