Luton Town are close to sealing a season-long loan deal for an attacker with Premier League experience.
The Hatters have started the League One season unbeaten, with one win and one draw that sees them third early in the season. To some, Jack Wilshere’s side are real promotion challengers after narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season.
With the transfer window nearly at an end, Luton are keen to add to their side to boost their promotion hopes this season.
We’ve already seen the Hatters linked with Manchester United midfielder Dan Gore to bolster their midfield. But they are also said to be close to a deal for Tottenham Hotspur’s Jamie Donley.
Luton Town Near Loan Deal for Tottenham’s Jamie Donley
Lilywhite Rose on X, who specialises in Spurs’ academy players, has reported that Luton are close to a season-long loan deal for Donley.
The Northern Ireland international has had several loans in his short career and last season played in the Championship for Stoke City and Oxford United.
Struggles Last Season but Impressive in League One
Last season playing in the second tier, Donley likely didn’t do as well as he or Tottenham would have hoped. In a combined 17 Championship games for Stoke and Oxford, he scored just one goal and picked up two assists.
His struggles came off his impressive first loan at Leyton Orient in the 2024/25 season. Donley scored eight goals and had 10 assists in 39 games for Orient, picking up an average Sofascore rating of 7.14 – the highest in the squad that season.
As well as 10 assists, he created 17 big chances and averaged 1.6 key passes per game. Donley also finished the season with a pass accuracy of 70%.
Donley’s also had experience at international level. He has scored one goal in four World Cup qualifiers for Northern Ireland.
Can He Rediscover His Best and Fire Luton to Promotion?
Even though he struggled to make a return on goals and assists, some are surprised he is dropping back to League One rather than returning to the Championship.
Donley’s numbers in his last League One campaign helped Leyton Orient to the play-off final, where they narrowly missed out on promotion, losing 1-0 to Charlton Athletic. Playing in the third tier once again should help him rediscover his best form.
If he can hit the ground running for the Hatters, he could be a crucial part of Luton’s promotion challenge this season.
