Milton Keynes Dons have had a £500,000 bid rejected by Rotherham United for Sam Nombe after Sheffield Wednesday were briefly linked to Callum Paterson.
The Wednesday Word reported in June that the Owls were considering a move for the 31-year-old striker, 12 months after he departed Hillsborough to join Paul Warne’s side.
Nombe On Dons’ Radar
While news of Paterson’s return to Hillsborough have somewhat cooled, the Buckinghamshire side are still exploring new moves to improve their lineup for next season as they step up to League One.
According to Football Insider transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke, Sam Nombe has now entered the frame in Milton Keynes, and have had a £500,000 bid rejected by Rotherham United.
Alan Nixon stated earlier in the week that while Rotherham had initially held a £1 million price tag for their talisman, it was more realistic that that figure would drop to as low as £600,000.
Nombe has been in hot demand heading into the summer, with multiple League One sides touted with a move for the 27-year-old forward, such as Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and others.
He has one year remaining on his contract at the New York Stadium, and had another double-figure haul season for the Millers, scoring 13 times across all competitions.
Should Wednesday Switch Targets?
While Callum Paterson’s return could be a good move for Sheffield Wednesday to make as they look to re-establish themselves, perhaps making a jump for Sam Nombe could be an even better move for them to make.
While the 16-goal Scottish striker was electric for MK Dons last season, rightfully earning his place in the League Two team of the season, whether he can keep that form up in League One remains to be seen.
If the Owls can manage to claw their way back into the Championship, Paterson’s return could leave them exactly where they were 12 months ago, allowing him to walk for free as they seek much better options now their transfer embargo has been lifted.
Sam Nombe could be someone who can make that step up, and with a much better supporting cast around him, making the short switch across the Don Valley could see the former Exeter City man thrive.
Adept in the box, all 12 of his League One goals came from inside the area, where he also managed to win two penalties, and has been one of the better-performing strikers for successful dribbles and aerial duels.
While Wednesday should be aiming higher for their starting striker for next season, Nombe could be a more than capable rotation option with experience in both League One and the Championship.
