League One new boys Notts County are keen on improving their attacking line ahead of the new season.

County returned to the third tier after beating Salford City 3-0 in the League Two play-off final last season.

In a bid to improve their survival chances, the Magpies are eyeing a move for a forward who scored seven goals in 16 League Two games last campaign.

Burnley’s Michael Mellon spent last season at Oldham Athletic, but had his season cut short through injury. His impressive start to the season appears to have been enough to catch the attention of Notts County.

Alan Nixon on his Patreon has shared that the League One side are interested in a move for Mellon to add further quality to their front line.

Nixon has also reported that Championship side Burnley would be expecting around £250,000 for the forward.

Mellon’s Form Halted by Injury

After joining Oldham on loan last summer, Mellon’s season started well.

In 16 League Two games, the 22-year-old scored seven goals, averaging 3.7 shots per game and 1.6 shots on target per game.

His standout performance came against Tranmere Rovers. Mellon scored three goals in his side’s 3-1 victory and received a 10 rating from Sofascore.

Sadly, the game after, Mellon picked up an injury that would keep him out for the remainder of the season.

The forward was on course to potentially beat his best goal tally in senior football before picking up his injury.

In the 2023/24 League Two season, Mellon scored 13 goals for Morecambe in 22 games before his loan was cut short, and he was sent north of the border to Dundee.

Competition for Places

Mellon will have some tough competition for a starting spot in the County side.

Last season, Matthew Dennis and Alassana Jatta scored 14 and 15 goals, respectively, in the league, helping fire the Magpies to promotion.

Martin Paterson will likely keep faith in the two forwards who were so crucial to Notts County last season, with Mellon providing support from the bench.

The healthy competition between the three will likely only benefit the Magpies as they all push each other for a spot in the starting 11.
