Sheffield Wednesday are considering mounting a raid on Milton Keynes Dons in order to recruit former star Callum Paterson.
The 31-year-old was a well-liked figure at Hillsborough across his five seasons in South Yorkshire, making 186 appearances before exiting the club last summer, with Paul Warne’s side sealing his signature after he hit the free agent market.
Wednesday Rebuild Continues
Paterson has continued to deliver regularly, having been a leading figure in MK Dons’ promotion charge in League Two last season, scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists as the Buckinghamshire side finished second.
Now, according to Joe Crann in his Wednesday Word Substack, Henrik Pedersen is planning on bringing the Scottish forward back to the Steel City this summer as part of the club’s heavy recruitment drive.
The Owls are ready to compete once more in the market after David Storch’s takeover at Hillsborough, and have already earmarked a few players as key targets over the coming months.
A return for club icon Barry Bannan is advancing, perhaps aided by Millwall’s signing of Jenson Metcalfe from Bradford City adding a further option in midfield for the Championship promotion hopefuls.
They have also eyed a move for another League Two star from the past season in Colchester United‘s Kyreece Lisbie, but do face competition from Oxford United and Reading among others.
Any deal for Paterson would result in a transfer fee, with the former Cardiff City man still under contract at Stadium: MK.
Paterson Should Be Prioritised
With a new era underway at Sheffield Wednesday, fans will be eager to get as many players as possible through the door in order make them competitive next season.
Thanks to the lifting of their points deduction at the end of last season, the Owls will be on equal footing to their League One rivals, meaning that they are surely one of the more attractive destinations to head to in the third tier.
However, there needs to be some consideration as to how they go about their business, considering the exits they have seen during the final stages of Dejphon Chansiri’s running of the club.
Barring Liam Cooper, the club have lost the majority of their leadership group, and adding those figures into their new-look squad is crucial to their chances.
While they look to have redeemed some of that with Barry Bannan’s return edging ever closer, finding other options will also be pivotal and Callum Paterson more than fits the bill.
A former player of the club as well, the striker has not slowed down one bit despite dropping into League Two, and adding a reliable forward option is key to challenge for promotion.
So while making moves for the future with players like Kyreece Lisbie will be key, a return for Callum Paterson is even more important to put Wednesday back on their feet as soon as possible.
