Colchester United are in talks with Dundee FC‘s Paul Digby as they hunt for a replacement for the outgoing Arthur Read.
The 26-year-old moved to newly promoted York City last week as they look to press on and challenge for back-to-back promotions, leaving Danny Cowley’s side in need of new options.
Digby On Radar
Now, according to the Daily Record, the U’s could have landed on a new option to replace Read, with Paul Digby currently engaging in talks over a move to the League Two club.
The 31-year-old has been marked as surplus to requirements on Deeside, having had limited involvement in their previous Scottish Premiership campaign.
Having played for five seasons at Cambridge United, the former Barnsley prospect opted to head north to Dundee on a free transfer, but struggled with just 18 appearances in total and just 702 minutes across their league campaign.
Digby has not travelled with Steven Pressley’s side to their pre-season camp in Hungary, who have already moved for his replacement with the signing of Blackpool‘s Ryan Finnigan for an undisclosed fee.
Cowley Eyes Experience
It was always going to be difficult to replace such a pivotal player like Arthur Read for Colchester United, and it seems they are banking on adding more veteran players to their ranks to fill that void.
Paul Digby has had a torrid season at Dundee, and after 12 months, it seems both parties have decided that there is no chance for them to continue together, allowing him to move elsewhere is the best course of action.
For Colchester, they are set to pick up a player who has been fairly solid in his position, and going by his performances the last time he played in England with Cambridge United, he could be a strong signing.
He has fared well, particularly in aerial situations and his defensive work, but leaves a lot to be desired in his attacking contributions.
So while Colchester are set to pick up someone who can be a great holding midfielder, Danny Cowley will need to find a few more options to replace the exits of both Read and Kyreece Lisbie as part of their new-look forward line next season.
