Sam Nombe could leave Rotherham United for a substantial six-figure fee this window amid interest from League One and the Championship.
The striker was a bright spot in an otherwise dire season for the Millers, which saw them face relegation down to League Two after a humiliating campaign.
Fee Revealed Amid Previous Interest
Slipping down to the fourth tier has begun a clearout of the playing squad at the New York Stadium, with midfielder Joe Powell the most recent to leave, heading to Rotherham’s fourth-tier rivals in Salford City.
Sam Nombe has also been touted with an exit, with reports back in May suggesting that two unnamed clubs have already contacted the South Yorkshire side over the 27-year-old’s services with 12 months to go on his deal.
The former Exeter City man has also been linked to other sides such as Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and Championship newcomers Bolton Wanderers in the build-up to the summer window, but all trails have since gone cold.
The Rotherham Advertiser have previously reported that United are keen to recoup as much of the seven-figure fee they paid for Nombe back in 2023, but now, according to Alan Nixon via his social media, that number could drop down to £600,000 with the potential to rise to £800,000.
Scoring 12 times last season, the forward has served under six different managers in his time at the club, also being one of the squad members who have suffered two successive relegations.
Should Reading Sign Nombe?
Sam Nombe has been an unfortunate victim of Rotherham United’s downward spiral, with his efforts ultimately going without reward since their drop down into League One two seasons ago.
An exit is probably the best for all parties, with the 27-year-old much better than the League Two level, and Rotherham able to recoup a sizable fee to spend on several other players who can improve the remainder of the squad.
Perhaps the most obvious destination for Nombe to head to is Reading, having previously been a favourite of Leam Richardson during his tenure at the New York Stadium.
Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan started to prove he was a capable choice when it came to leading the line, but with many of their striking options underwhelming over the past 12 months, adding a more proven option may be needed.
However, given they have already spent a significant fee on Kyreece Lisbie following his arrival from Colchester United, it remains to be seen if Royals owner Rob Couhig would be willing to shell out a similar price for a new forward.
