The last UEFA coefficient analysis is here, with the final battle being decided across the second legs of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Conference League semifinals. Six teams from four different countries are in the final across the three competitions, with the first one to occur on Wednesday.

Football Lowdown takes a look at the points obtained from the previous matchweek, and how it impacted the last UEFA coefficient battle.

UEFA Coefficient Battle: Spain Outlasts Germany for EPS

For the second year in a row, England and Spain are the countries earning the European Performance Spots. It took a Rayo Vallecano win in the Conference League to get the Spaniards over the line, winning a fifth UCL berth for next season.

National Association Season Coefficient (Record) Weekly Coefficient (Record) Teams Left Bonus Points 24/25 Coefficient
1. England (=) 28.125 (69-17-28) 0.666 (3-0-1) 3 (9) 0.333 29.464
2. Spain (=) 22.093 (48-14-36) 0.250 (1-0-1) 1 (8) 0.062 23.892
3. Germany (=) 21.785 (42-13-27) 0.428 (1-1-0) 1 (7) 0.142 18.421
4. Portugal (=) 20.500 (34-12-18) 0.000 (0-0-1) 0 (5) N/A 16.250
5. Italy (=) 19.000 (37-13-28) N/A 0 (7) N/A 21.875
6. France (=) 18.178 (36-13-31) 0.142 (0-1-1) 1 (7) 0.214 17.928

Top honours once again go to England, something which was known for quite sometime. But now Spain can celebrate second place in the seasonal UEFA coefficient ranking.

Bayern Munich’s UCL elimination opened up the door for Vallecano to clinch things for Spain. Their win in France, significantly aided by a stoppage time penalty save, got the job done. Despite Freiburg also winning to advance to the Europa League final, it was not enough for Germany. They lose out by the slimmest of margins.

The difference between the two countries is currently 0.318, which is incredibly small. In fact, Germany could finish on 22.070, which is just 0.023 points behind Spain’s current total. That shows just how close this race became.

Remarkably, Bayern nearly gave Germany an extra UCL spot, as they scored a stoppage time goal against Paris Saint-Germain. That goal made the result 1-1, instead of a defeat. Had Rayo been eliminated UECL, then Freiburg’s progression would have resulted in second place for the Bundesliga.

England will have at least five places in the UCL next term, though that could become six should Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth in the Premier League. Spain’s places in UEFA’s premier club competition is fixed at five, while Germany could still join them in that regard, if Freiburg prevails in the UEL final. It would, however, leave their country without a Conference League spot next term.

One of England or Spain will have nine teams in Europe next term, as the winner of the UECL showpiece will enter the UEL proper next fall. That will see the country’s UEFA coefficient haul be divided by nine, rather than eight.

Among the other countries involved in the semifinals, Portugal’s wonderful season comes to a close after Sporting Braga lost their Europa League match. Earning 20.500 points, the Portuguese finished sixth in the five-year ranking, cruising past Netherlands. It also puts them in a commanding position to remain sixth come the end of next term.

Ukraine’s campaign is also done, as Shakhtar Donetsk could not overturn their first leg deficit. They ended up 23rd in the five-year ranking, 1.275 points behind Hungary for 22nd. They will be kicking themselves for not being able to claim a top 22 spot, given the advantage they had heading into the league phase.

France will have a European finalist for the second year running, though they suffered their 28th defeat via Strasbourg, who could have given their nation a total of eight teams in Europe next season had they gone all the way in the UECL.

The UEFA coefficient battles will restart in July for the 2026/27 campaign, when the qualifying rounds take place.
