Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough was angered by the lack of communication between the officials and managers over a mid-match change in referee due to injury.
The Stags were beaten on the road against a potential playoff rival in Bradford City courtesy of an early Antoni Sarcevic goal, with the visitors later having a goal chalked out for a foul in the build-up to Michael Smith finding the net.
Clough Highlights Double Standards
The result at Valley Parade marked Town’s third defeat in four League One matches; however, Nigel Clough was far from impressed by the events of the second half, which started in a change in referee due to an injury for Zac Kennard-Kettle, who was replaced by Conor Ledgeway.
Speaking to the media following the result, the former Derby County boss said (Quotes via Telegraph and Argus):
“The referee was limping after five or 10 minutes and eventually went off at half-time. We were not notified by anybody that the referee was changing, nor was Graham or Bradford City.
“We had to make a change before the game obviously with Liam Roberts.
“We tell the referee and the fourth official and go through everything and they can’t even have the courtesy to tell us that they are changing referees at half-time.”
Disallowed Goal Breakdown
Minutes after the restart, a goalmouth scramble eventually landed at the feet of summer recruit Michael Smith, who was able to poke the ball home, handing Mansfield a vital equaliser.
However, after some initial confusion, the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the build-up, much to the chagrin of Clough, who levelled his criticism at the refereeing body rather than the stand-in Ledgeway.
In his post-match interview with the Mansfield Chad, the 60-year-old stated:
“The referee actually gave the goal, the linesman started running up the touchline and then changed his mind and gave a foul. We just cannot believe it.
“I think it’s such a poor indictment on Mike Jones and his organisation that when the first choice referee is out injured, the lad came on and is next in line to referee. If that’s the best they can do then I don’t know what they are doing. He’s come on in such an important game today and I’ve never seen him before in my life.
“I don’t think he’s ever refereed a game at this level. I just felt very sorry for him to be put in that position. But the blame lies with Mike Jones and his organisation, nobody else.”
Further elaborating on the situation, he clarified (Quotes via Telegraph and Argus):
“He should not be in that position because it was obviously far, far too much for him and ultimately it has cost us a point because of the goal that he disallowed.
“I don’t think a more experienced referee would have disallowed that goal. It’s funny because the referee who came off said, ‘oh clear foul’.
“I said, ‘Well, why didn’t he give it straightaway? Why did he actually give the goal if it’s a clear foul? Why didn’t he blow his whistle straightaway?‘
“The poor lad, a young lad, was like a rabbit caught in headlights a little bit. It’s not on him and it’s very, very unfair for him to be put into that position today. But unfortunately, we’ve suffered for it.”
Should Clough Feel Aggrieved?
While it was certainly less than ideal, it is fairly unexpected for a senior referee to go down injured, meaning that a more inexperienced referee may be called upon, as has happened in the Bradford City vs Mansfield Town game.
Conor Ledgeway may not have officiated at the League One level, but given the unexpected nature of his officiating debut, he was fairly adept in the game, but given the inconsistency from the way his predecessor was managing the game, it may cause frustration.

However, the big talking point on the day was Michael Smith’s disallowed goal, which was chalked off after some confusion, according to Nigel Clough after the match.
In the replays, it seems that the former Sheffield Wednesday man was leading into Jon McCracken with his elbow, and while it is at close quarters in his attempt to try and get the Stags level, that action is likely the decisive factor that led to the decision.
For Clough, it is another loss on the board for his side, and while not to the same magnitude as their thumping on the road against Reading, it does not get any easier for his side with a clash against an in-form Huddersfield Town spearheaded by Derensili Sanches Fernandes.
