Barnsley‘s Georgie Gent has been loaned to National League outfit Boston United as the defender looks for his first regular game time in over a year.
The 22-year-old is yet to appear in any of Daniel Stendel’s matchday squads after spending last season working his way back to full fitness after an injury limited him to just four League One appearances under previous boss Conor Hourihane.
Gent Deal Made Amid Unavailability Concerns
With no place in the plans at Oakwell after the late transfer window recruitment of former Tyke Ziyad Larkouche on loan from Queens Park Rangers, the former Blackburn Rovers man is now set to head into non-league, with Boston United picking him up on a month-long basis.
According to their club website, the left-back has been brought in by the Lincolnshire club as cover for the potential loss of Gibraltarian international Kai Mauro as the Autumn break for the UEFA Nations League nears.
A revised formatting of the calendar means that there is now a three-week stint of matches for countries, which could see Mauro miss out on as many as four league fixtures for the Pilgrims.
A first appearance for the 22-year-old could come tonight, with United playing West Bromwich Albion‘s youth academy side in the National League Cup.
Paul Hurst’s men are currently 15th in the National League table, and head into the weekend on a three-match winless streak ahead of a home clash against Wealdstone.
Good Reset For Gent
With opportunities limited for Georgie Gent at Barnsley, a chance to find some regular football elsewhere on a temporary basis will be a great way to get him back into the rhythm of playing.
After a long-term injury absence, combined with losing the favour of previous manager Conor Hourihane due to his training performances, it has been a tough few months for the 22-year-old, and with Boston United, he now has an opportunity to prove himself.
However, given the terms of the deal, it seems that there is no intention from Paul Hurst to keep him on past his initial 28-day loan period, using him just as cover should Kai Mauro be called up by Gibraltar.
Whether it will be enough to convince Daniel Stendel that he can contribute to his first team in the coming months remains to be seen, but for now, Gent just has to try and perform to the best of his abilities and give the German something to think about when he returns to South Yorkshire.
