Sheffield Wednesday are plotting an ambitious move for a Championship forward as they continue to make improvements ahead of the League One season.
The Owls can once again sign players after Arise Capital took over the club, who were in administration for the majority of last season.
Wednesday are moving quick to make sure their team is competitive on the field this season and are now turning their attention to the attacking spots.
The South Yorkshire club are said to have several names on their shortlist, including Blackburn Rovers forward Yuki Ohashi.
Sheffield Wednesday Interested in Yuki Ohashi
In a joint piece for The Star, Alex Miller and Chris Holt have confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday have added Ohashi to their target list.
It’s believed that the interest in the Japanese forward is, for now, very much just that, interest, with no suggestion whether the deal would be a loan or permanent.
With pre-season just about to start, it is likely that Wednesday will look to speed up their recruitment to allow the team to gel before the season starts.
Consecutive Double-Figure Goal Hauls
If a deal is to be done, the Owls would be getting a forward who has scored 10+ in the past four seasons.
The 29-year-old scored 10 goals last season for Blackburn, with two of his 10 coming away at Sheffield United in April.
Ohashi scored 10 goals in all competitions for Rovers the season before, as well as 14 and 13 the seasons prior, while playing in Japan.
Not only did he lead the Lancashire side in goals last season, but he also had the most shots per match (2.2) and shots on target per game (0.8).
Creatively, he only had one assist in the Championship last season, creating two big chances and averaging 0.6 key passes per game.
Smart Signing for the Owls
Although no official bid appears to have been made, Ohashi would be a great signing for Wednesday in League One.
He’s proven he can score goals in the second tier, so he would likely take to life in the third tier with ease.
His work ethic would also match what Henrik Pedersen is looking for, a pressing forward who can be their first line of defence. Last season, he averaged one tackle per game and recovered 2.2 balls per game, which shows his willingness to play his role defensively.
A deal might be some way off for now, but it’s another exciting report for Sheffield Wednesday fans.
