Leicester City are on course to lose Harry Winks after it was reported in Italy that Cagliari have held talks with the midfielder.
Signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, the 30-year-old has made over 100 appearances for the Foxes and was a critical part of their promotion campaign under Enzo Maresca during his debut season.
Leicester Sanction Exit
However, Winks could be on his way out from the League One newcomers, as according to Italian football journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Cagliari are now well on their way to striking a deal over the midfielder.
It is believed that Russell Martin’s side have already green-lit a transfer to the Serie A side, with talks already underway between the Sardinian club and the player, with expectations growing that this deal can be completed.
Despite initial indications that Winks may have left the club on a free upon the expiry of his contract, it has now been clarified that due to a promotion clause in his contract, the former Spurs man still has 12 months remaining on his deal.
Leicester have been forced into a selling policy this summer due to their financial situation, having been deducted six points last season amid their battle against relegation in the Championship.
Teenager Jeremy Monga has already been the target of a bid from Arsenal, which was swiftly knocked back by the Foxes, who are holding out for an eight-figure fee plus a sell-on clause.
While no new faces have arrived yet at the East Midlands side, they are focusing on signing replacements for the outgoing Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka, with former Ipswich Town man Conor Chaplin a key target, according to Football League World.
Winks Clearance Paves Way For Braybrooke
Given their current situation, both financially and in stature, it was inevitable that many of Leicester City’s current crop of players would be shipped off as part of a full reset under new boss Russell Martin.
Harry Winks is no different, and given his previous experience in Italy with Sampdoria, he may be willing to return to a league which has seen other British midfielders flourish like Billy Gilmour, Lewis Ferguson and of course Scott McTominay.
His exit now leaves a gap in the midfield for the incoming Martin to handle, but thankfully, it seems they already have a tailor-made replacement at the club who could become a key player next season.
Sammy Braybrooke has slowly developed into a hot prospect in the lower end of the EFL, with spells at Chesterfield and Newport County that have earned him rave reviews in League Two.
Now, with his parent club down in the dumps, he could be ready to make the step up to League One and stake his place as a regular in this new-look Leicester City side.
