Shrewsbury Town are in talks to sign Birmingham City youngster Byron Pendleton as Gavin Cowan looks to add another familiar face to his squad ahead of the new League Two season.
The 20-year-old right-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Brackley Town, where he played under Cowan before the manager made the move to The Croud Meadow.
Pendleton made 13 appearances for Brackley after joining from Birmingham in January, having already spent the first half of the campaign on loan at National League side Yeovil Town. He featured 14 times during his spell at Huish Park before that loan was cut short in November.
His time at Brackley was brief, but he made a clear impression. Pendleton was named both players’ player of the season and captain’s player of the season at St James Park, despite only arriving midway through the campaign.
He operated mainly as a right-back or right wing-back for Brackley, although his loan spell ended early after an injury disrupted the closing stages of his season. He then returned to Birmingham City.
A move to Shrewsbury would reunite Pendleton with Cowan as Salop continue reshaping their squad following the appointment of the former Brackley boss. If completed, he would become Shrewsbury’s fourth signing of the summer.
Town have already brought in Josh Davison and wide defender Arkell Jude-Boyd, while defenders Luca Hoole and Josh Ruffels have been retained ahead of the new campaign.
Pendleton has been with Birmingham City since pre-academy level, having joined the club at the age of five. He signed his first professional contract in October 2023 and agreed an extension in early 2025.
He also captained Birmingham’s under-21 side during the 2024/25 campaign and was part of the club’s pre-season tour squad in 2024, featuring in friendlies. He is still waiting for his competitive first-team debut.
Shrewsbury’s squad are due to report back for pre-season training this week as Cowan continues preparations for his first campaign in charge at the The Croud Meadow.
