Reading could lose captain Lewis Wing this summer as unnamed Championship clubs show interest in the 31-year-old.
The midfielder put in a career-best performance while captaining the Royals last season, with his 12 goals and 11 assists putting them in with a shot of the League One playoffs prior to an end-of-season slump.
Wing Interest Develops
According to the Daily Mirror’s Daniel Marsh, sides from both the Championship and League One are now keen on signing Wing this summer.
It is believed that Leam Richardson’s side sees him as a pivotal part of their plans for next season, with the captain still having two years left on his contract after clinching a new deal the previous summer.
Wing has been an ever-present in League One over the past two seasons in Berkshire, having made the switch across from Wycombe Wanderers as a free transfer in 2023.
The former Middlesbrough youth product has gained plenty of experience in the EFL, having also represented Yeovil Town, Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday in loan spells away from the Riverside.
Midfield Shakeup Could Sink Chances
Lewis Wing’s importance to Reading cannot be understated, with his goal contributions being a large part of how the Royals were briefly able to challenge for a playoff place.
Losing him to anyone else, especially sides in League One, would be extremely damaging to a side which is already under intense scrutiny after how the season ended under Leam Richardson.
Furthermore, it could prove to be even worse, given that Charlie Savage could also be poached away from the club following interest from Championship newcomers Cardiff City.
While the trail has gone cold when it comes to reports around the 23-year-old, a sale of either player will harm any chances of promotion this season, in what should be a much more competitive division already.
Which Sides Could Make A Move?
A few sides could certainly use an all-action midfielder like Lewis Wing in their ranks next season, should they be able to convince Reading to sell their star man.
Sheffield Wednesday have been extremely active in the market thus far, and given their prior interest in Callum Paterson, are not against bringing back former Owls to South Yorkshire under this new regime.
Blackburn Rovers could be a Championship side which needs to find a much more front-footed midfielder this summer amid Todd Cantwell’s struggles, and adding Wing could help Yuki Ohashi’s goal tally skyrocket.
Finally, Middlesbrough could be a candidate to bring their former player back to Teesside, and given Riley McGree’s injury issues over recent history, adding a more experienced player as additional depth and competition wouldn’t hurt.
