Steven Sessegnon is set to undergo a medical with AFC Wimbledon as he verges on a move away from Wigan Athletic.

Gary Caldwell allowed the 26-year-old to walk away from Lancashire upon the expiry of his contract next week as the former Exeter City boss looks to revitalise the 2013 FA Cup winners.

Dons Set For Move

Now, as reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Sessegnon has found a new club in the form of Wigan’s League One rivals in AFC Wimbledon, who are also looking to strengthen and avoid a relegation scrap.

Johnnie Jackson’s side finished three points and places behind the Latics in the third-tier table, and are already making defensive additions, with James Tilley also on course to head back to Plough Lane.

Sessegnon is set to undergo a medical with the Dons today, and is now set to return to the capital for the first time in three years since his switch to Wigan from Fulham.

Beginning his career with the Cottagers alongside his twin brother Ryan, the centre-back earned several loan moves across the EFL with stints at Plymouth Argyle, Bristol City and Charlton Athletic.

However, he struggled to pin down regular first-team minutes since his free transfer to the Latics, playing just 15 times across all competitions in the previous two seasons.

Sensible Move For Dons

As a free transfer, signing Steven Sessegnon is a solid piece of business for AFC Wimbledon to make as they look to improve on a 19th-place finish in League One and replace Sam Hutchinson.

There will of course be concerns that he is not a standout name that will immediately become a first-team regular, but in terms of depth, especially if Johnnie Jackson reverts to his back three formation, he will be a helpful option.

A left-footed centre-back is hard to come by, so he should be able to sit comfortably alongside Ryan Johnson and Isaac Ogundere if called upon.

His time at Wigan was perhaps underwhelming overall, failing to truly impress enough to dislodge James Carragher, Jason Kerr and fellow outgoin Will Aimson, and a move back to his native London may be able to help him flourish once more.
