Scunthorpe United are continuing their transfer plans after falling short of promotion last season, with a defender appearing to be the next identified target.
Andy Butler’s side finished fifth in the National League last season, reaching the play-off places in their debut campaign back in the division though fell short against eventual winners Rochdale in the semi-finals.
The club have already completed five signings this summer, including Oldham Athletic‘s Reagan Ogle and Doncaster Rovers‘ Kyle Hurst as well as the addition of experienced centre-back Callum Howe.
However, it does appear as though the Iron’s defensive rebuild isn’t yet complete…
Scunthorpe identify defensive target
Following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, Scunthorpe bid farewell to several players including Andrew Boyce – leaving a whole in their defensive arsenal that is likely to be of priority for Butler and his team.
The addition of Howe from National League champions York City adds experience, leadership and quality at the back, but are likely to remain in the market for further depth ahead of next season.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Scunthorpe United are doing just that as experienced defender Kyle Jameson is of interest to the club, following his departure from relegated National League side Morecambe.
The 27-year-old had a delayed start to the 2025/26 season, remaining as a free agent until November when he signed for Harrogate Town, before moving on to Morecambe in February in an attempt to try and keep them in the fifth tier.
Across all competitions, Jameson made 19 appearances last season and has previous experience with the likes of Barrow and Tranmere Rovers.
If this move does occur, it would be a free transfer for the Iron after his contract with the Shrimps has came to an end following their relegation to the National League North.
Will Jameson’s arrival benefit the Iron?
Understandably, a National League play-off semi finalist signing a player relegated from the division doesn’t necessarily standout on paper but his experience in the EFL could play an important role next season.
Whilst Scunthorpe have several experienced players on their books, they have also lost some key players including Cal Roberts – meaning some of the younger players in the squad are likely to need more experience around them to aid their development.
Jameson has struggled for regular minutes in recent season’s, but given he’s joined on a free transfer – means he is likely to be considered as a low-risk addition, thus ensuring the club will have depth and won’t be losing money.
If the 27-year-old can stay fit, he could grow to settle with Butler’s side, allowing him to grow in confidence and potentially set him up to defy initial expectation next season.
