Since the conclusion of the 2025/26 National League season, there has already been over 175 transfers, though bizarrely there are still some big names without a club.
Aldershot Town and Yeovil Town respectively have been the busiest clubs in the transfer market so far, with the former having a brand new manager as well as saying goodbye to all but four of last season’s team.
Meanwhile, Gateshead have made just one addition thus far – being the quietest club in the division by a distance, though there is still over three weeks until the new season gets underway.
With that said, here are four current free agents that National League clubs should be looking to sign in the coming weeks…
Cameron John:
Kicking proceedings off is experienced centre-back Cameron John, who has become a free agent after his contract with National League champions York City came to an end.
John is a left-sided centre-back by trait, but can also play as a left-back, adding plenty of defensive depth, leadership and experience to his next club.
He spent the 2025/26 with fellow fifth-tier side Hartlepool United, making 39 league appearances and contributing to four goals as the club narrowly missed out on the play-off places.
In terms of possible destinations – Hartlepool benefited from John’s presence last season, whilst Solihull Moors are likely to need a left-sided defender after loanees Lewis Baines and Dan Cox departed.
Jack Sims:
Goalkeeper Jack Sims is next on our list, following his decision to turn down a contract extension at Sutton United, after the 2025/26 campaign came to an end.
The 27-year-old is an experienced goalkeeper in the National League, developing a positive reputation when it comes to keeping clean sheets as well as saving penalties.
Last season was Sims’ second campaign with Sutton United, appearing in 35 of their 46 league matches – whilst contributing to five clean sheets, in what was ultimately a challenging season for the football club.
Currently, there are several sides in need of a new goalkeeper including Solihull, Southend United and Yeovil Town – giving Sims plenty of potential options for his next move.
Erico Sousa:
Play-off finalist Erico Sousa was released by Boreham Wood, after the 2025/26 campaign came to an end – and surprisingly he remains a free agent.
Sousa can operate as left-sided midfielder/winger, but can also play on the opposite side of the pitch if required.
He’s spent the last four seasons with Boreham Wood, making over 100 appearances across all competitions. Last season, he contributed to 12 goals across 27 league matches and was part of the side that beat West Ham United in the NL Cup.
With the 31-year-old being an experience winger at National League level, any club looking for a versatile wide player should be all over Sousa – especially on a free transfer.
Florent Hoti:
Speaking of attacking outlets, former Halifax Town playmaker Florent Hoti is a free agent this summer after an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign.
The 25-year-old missed the majority of the season through injury, but recovered to feature in seven matches of the campaign – in which he scored once during a victory against Eastleigh.
Hoti can operate as a number ten, though he also has the ability to play on the left or right-hand side of midfield.
Solihull having Chris Millington as manager could suggest a likely move there – though they have also brought in Joe Sbarra already. Similarly, location wise could see Altrincham pursue a deal.
