Tamworth are closing in on their latest summer signing, as their summer rebuild continues to take shape as a result of their change in ownership in recent weeks.
The Lambs have been active in the transfer window thus far, landing almost an entirely new squad with the likes of Hartlepool United‘s Tom Parkes and Boston United‘s Kieren Donnelly being amongst those to have been signed already.
Since their promotion from the National League North, Tamworth have secured back-to-back top-half finishes despite being the only part-time side in the division – though the club are aiming for that to change.
Tamworth eye free agent
Despite managing to secure a second consecutive top-half finish, the Lambs conceded 71 goals across their 46 league matches, which is one shy of their previous total. This means that since being promoted, the club have conceded 1.55 goals per game.
One position that has yet to be changed since the takeover is their goalkeeper, with Jas Singh retaining his number one shirt whilst youngster Dan Rachel has stepped up to provide competition behind him – though things could be about to change.
According to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, Tamworth are closing in on a deal to sign former Kidderminster Harriers shot-stopper Rhys Lovett on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old began the 2025/26 season with fellow National League side Boston United, keeping four clean sheets across 26 league matches – though was surprisingly moved on to then-sixth tier side Kidderminster, helping them to reach the play-offs, though didn’t play in any of their matches beyond that.
Lovett was released by Kidderminster after their promotion was confirmed, and now appears set to join the Lambs – returning to the Midlands in the process.
Is a change between the sticks required?
Singh has been Tamworth’s ever-present figure between the sticks, playing huge roles in their promotion, survival and FA Cup runs respectively – though isn’t getting any younger.
He is currently 36, suggesting he won’t be in their ‘long-term’ plans for much longer, though his age hasn’t been an issue given he outperformed his 2024/25 campaign last season despite playing nine fewer matches.
The 36-year-old played 810 fewer minutes, though made more saves (3.5 vs 2.8), had a higher save percentage (68.6% vs 65.6%), completed more accurate passes (13.6 vs 10.8) and averaged a higher match rating (7.16 vs 7.03).
Therefore, you could argue that Singh has done more than enough to retain his place between the sticks next season.
However, Tamworth’s current back-up option is youngster Dan Rachel who’s only minutes came in the National League Cup and is at an age where he may be pushing for a loan move.
If this is the case, Lovett’s arrival would provide depth as well as adding significant quality and competition, which would push Singh even further next season.
