Former FC Halifax Town Star Lifts Lid on Unusual Summer Exit

During the summer transfer window, several FC Halifax Town players were caught up in an unusual contract option scenario, with one of them recently discussing his version of events.

The Shaymen narrowly missed out on the play-off places under then-manager Adam Lakeland last season, and went on to publish their retained list – though reports elsewhere suggested that not all met the eye.

Several players including Adam Adetoro, Jay Turner-Cooke and Will Harris in particular were amongst those that faced uncertain futures, not knowing whether they were staying with the National League side or were free to leave on free transfers during the off-season.

Whilst forward Will Harris understandably took many of the plaudits with 21 goals to his name, midfielder Jay Turner-Cooke was the engine behind a standout season.

Halifax finished eighth in the National League last season, narrowly missing out on the play-off places, following a slip in form towards the end of the campaign.

Therefore, the unusual circumstances surrounding their contracts certainly wasn’t something supporters expected.

Speaking during a recent interview with the Shropshire Star, Turner-Cooke addressed what he knew surrounding the situation stating…

‘It was a mad one, really. I was actually on holiday when that happened – when I got my first phone call from my agent saying ‘we still haven’t heard anything from the club’.

‘My contract had finished. I don’t even know the details myself, I just know it was a long process, and we hadn’t heard anything for ages.

’It was a long process and hard for me because obviously I just wanted something to get sorted. Was I staying there, was I leaving?’

Following his exit, Turner-Cooke joined League Two side Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer, where he has made 13 appearances across all competitions thus far but is yet to provide a goal contribution.

Adding to his previous comments regarding the uncertainty, the midfielder said…

‘It took a couple of weeks to get it sorted (signing for Shrewsbury) because still things weren’t sorted somehow. And then eventually when I got here and I signed, yeah I was buzzing. I couldn’t wait to get started.’

Was leaving the correct decision?

Turner-Cooke’s 2025/26 campaign was his first full season in men’s first-team football on a consistent basis and immediately proved he was good enough to apply his trade in the EFL.

The 22-year-old contributed to 13 goals across all competitions, and likely had his eyes on a summer switch to continue testing himself at a higher level.

With the uncertainty surrounding his future at Halifax due to debates over his contract option, Turner-Cooke may have found himself wanting stability for himself rather than continuing to run the risk of going without payment.

Shrewsbury are currently sat 15th in League Two with just one defeat in their last five matches, whilst Halifax are 10th in the National League with one win in four games.

However, unlike other National League players in the past that have moved and not received minutes, Turner-Cooke is playing regular football at a higher level, suggesting so far that he indeed made the correct decision for him.
