Arsenal are among a growing list of major clubs tracking former Peterborough United defender Emmanuel Fernandez after his impressive season at Rangers.
The centre-back, who left London Road for around £3.5 million last summer, has seen his value skyrocket after establishing himself in the Scottish Premiership and earning international recognition with Nigeria. Reports now suggest Rangers could demand as much as £35 million for the defender, which would represent a record-breaking sale for the Scottish club.
Rapid rise
Fernandez’s rise has been rapid. After a slow start at Ibrox, he has become a key figure at the heart of the defence, combining physical presence with a genuine threat from set pieces. His ability to score from set pieces has added another dimension to his game, with several goals already this season helping boost his reputation.
Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase, but they are far from alone. Interest is said to be coming from across Europe and the Premier League, with Chelsea, West Ham United and Everton all monitoring the situation. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also believed to be keen, while Rangers are in a strong negotiating position due to the player’s long-term contract.
Whichever club does land the player, it will be huge for the League One outfit Peterborough United.
Huge Value Rise Since Peterborough Exit
If Rangers were to secure a fee in the region being reported, it would represent a remarkable profit on a player they signed less than a year ago. It would also be a significant financial boost for Posh, who inserted a sell-on clause when they sold the defender.
Fernandez originally joined Peterborough from non-league Ramsgate and developed into a Football League defender before his move north of the border. While he did not dominate headlines during his time in League One, the potential was clearly there, and Rangers moved quickly to secure him.
Since then, his development has accelerated. Playing regularly in a title-chasing side and European competition has increased both his experience and exposure, and scouts from several major clubs have reportedly attended matches to watch him in person.
Rangers are understood to be keen to keep the defender for at least another season, but the scale of interest and the potential transfer fee could make a sale difficult to resist if a major bid arrives in the summer. After being let down on the Ronnie Edwards, a top defender who evaded a major sell-on fee for Posh, Fernandez’s move could be a real game-changer.
