Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract until June 2030. Arteta is already the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, having taken charge at the Emirates in December 2019.

A statement on the club website read: “The new agreement reflects our shared belief that the progress we’ve made and last season’s success is the beginning of a special period in our history.”

On signing his new deal, Arteta said: “It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal.”

From Captain To Manager

Arteta’s association with Arsenal stretches back a decade and a half to his playing days. Following seven seasons at Everton, he made a deadline-day switch to the Emirates in August 2011. His debut came 10 days later at home to Swansea City.

Having been named vice-captain in 2012, Arteta captained the side for the 2014 FA Cup Final against Hull City, where the Gunners ended their nine-year trophy drought. He was named full-time club captain that summer.

In five years as a player, Arteta made 150 appearances before retiring at the end of the 2015-16 season. On retiring, he was appointed to the coaching staff at Manchester City, working as one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants.

He returned to North London as the permanent replacement for Unai Emery, who was sacked a month earlier with the club eighth in the Premier League – which would prove to be where they finished. They did, however, win the FA Cup, beating Chelsea 2-1 in a pandemic-delayed final.

Support Despite Tough Start

It would be easy to forget now that there were plenty of question marks over Arteta during his early days at the club. His first full season in charge saw another eighth place finish, a lack of silverware meaning bringing to an end of the club’s 25-year run of competing in Europe.

The Gunners also had a number of early exits in cup competitions, while recording three successive runners-up finishes from 2023-2025. In 2022-23 the Gunners spent most of the season top of the table, but ultimately fell five points short.

Despite the lack of major silverware since the FA Cup win, the board kept faith with their former captain, which began to be vindicated with runs to the semi-finals of the 2024-25 Carabao Cup and Champions League.

Last season saw the club finally go one step further and win the Premier League title, being crowned champions on 19 May after Manchester City could only draw against Bournemouth. It brought an end to a 22-year wait for a 14th league title. They also reached their second Champions League final, but were beaten on penalties by holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Could Arteta build A New Arsenal Dynasty?

Arteta has previously spoken of his desire to build a dynasty at Arsenal similar to the one under the early years of the reign of Arsene Wenger, which saw the club win three Premier League titles and four FA Cups between 1998 and 2005- including the Invincibles season of 2023-24.

There are a number of factors which could go in his favour. One of these is undoubtedly continuity when compared to rivals. After Arteta, the next longest-serving manager in the Premier League is currently his Arsenal predecessor, Emery, who took over as Aston Villa boss in November 2022.

Of their traditional top six rivals, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City all changed managers this summer- with Manchester United’s Michael Carrick only taking over in January. There is also the elephant in the room – whatever ends up coming from City’s guilty verdict for breaking the Premier League’s financial rules.

Arsenal return from the international break in second in the table, having won four of their five games so far. With the only side currently above them having a major cloud hanging over them, the North London side seem in prime position to take advantage – now they just have to make sure they actually do it.
