Bristol Rovers have signed Arvin Appiah, who once commanded a reported £8 million transfer fee, with the former Nottingham Forest prospect reuniting with Steve Evans after leaving Almeria.

The 25-year-old joins following his summer departure from the Spanish club and will wear the number 28 shirt. He had already spent more than a week with Rovers before the deal was announced, having returned to Evans’ attention while playing for Portsmouth during pre-season.

Versatility Gives Evans Additional Options

Evans previously worked with Appiah at Rotherham United and believes his ability to operate across several positions will benefit his new squad. Although much of his career has been spent as a winger, the Rovers manager sees potential to use him throughout midfield and on the left flank.

His ability with either foot was another quality highlighted by Evans, who credited the club’s hierarchy with helping complete the signing. Explaining what Appiah could offer, he said:

“He has got a wonderful talent. He can pass, dribble, shoot and play as a six, an eight, a ten, a left wing-back and a left winger.”

“This is a real asset for us because we fought really hard, as he had considerable interest from clubs in England and Scotland, and I am really grateful to our chairman and board for allowing us to do this on the day an SPL side rang his phone every 30 minutes.”

For Appiah, the reunion provides an opportunity to work with a manager who already knows his game. The former England youth international identified rebuilding his confidence as a priority and acknowledged that he now needs to repay Evans’ backing through his performances.

“Steve knows what I can do and what I can bring to this team. He just wants me to get my confidence back up, and I am grateful to him for putting that trust back in me.”

“Now, I have got to show it on the pitch. So, I am raring to go.”

Former £8 Million Prospect Returns To England

Appiah emerged through Forest’s academy and scored on his senior debut against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup in October 2018. He had made only eight first-team appearances when Almeria signed him on 2 September 2019 for a reported £8 million, handing the then 18-year-old a five-year contract.

That represented a substantial investment in a player whose senior career was still beginning. Appiah subsequently helped Almeria win promotion to La Liga, making 31 league appearances during their 2021/22 title-winning campaign, although much of his time under contract was spent out on loan.

Spells at Lugo, Tenerife and Malaga were followed by 29 Championship appearances for Rotherham in 2023/24. He then played 26 league matches for Portuguese side Nacional before making 14 appearances for Amiens in Ligue 2 last season.

After leaving Almeria, Appiah is now looking forward to resuming his career at the Memorial Stadium. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity and his eagerness to return to the pitch.

“I’m grateful and honoured to be here. I can’t wait to get on the pitch after being out for so long.”

“I’m happy to be back in a footballing environment, and it’s a good one, so I can’t complain.”

The £8 million fee illustrates the promise Appiah showed as a teenager, but his contribution at Rovers will depend on what he produces now. Working with a manager who knows his qualities could provide a useful foundation for rebuilding his confidence.

After several seasons of loans, establishing a consistent role looks like the next important step. His versatility gives Evans options, but finding the position in which Appiah can contribute most effectively could be central to making this signing work.
