Carlisle United have bounced back in the National League after a frustrating start to the season, and now one of the key players behind their turnaround has begun to eye an extended stint.
Rob Elliot’s side ended a five-match winless run with back-to-back victories over AFC Fylde & Aldershot Town to move to within four points of the play-off places.
They face high-flying Kidderminster Harriers this weekend, before kicking off their FA Cup campaign a week later – but know that despite an improvement in results, they still have work to do to get their season back on track.
Carlisle loanee eyes extended stay
In recent weeks, clubs across the National League have been busy trying to further bolster their options, following the closure of the EFL transfer window and Carlisle have been no exception.
One player they brought in was experienced centre-back Tom Anderson, who joined the National League side on loan from Shrewsbury Town to try and strengthen their defensive discipline after a tricky start to the season.
The 33-year-old was an unused substitute during his first game at the club, before appearing to help see out Carlisle’s victory over Aldershot at the weekend.
However, Elliot has already expressed praise for Anderson as well as revealing the defenders plans to extend his stay with the club.
Speaking to the News and Star, Elliot stated…
“Tom’s a good guy and a great pro. I think he’ll be happy if we’re keeping clean sheets in games. He wants to be here for the long run and he’s had a big impact already.”
When pressed further about Anderson’s comments regarding extending his stay, Elliot added…
“Well, that’s what Tom said to me… He wants to be here and he’s coming to prove himself to be a big asset and he’s already done that, like the other lads have. So, fingers crossed, he’s going to be a big part of the squad and the team and keeps helping us get performances.”
Anderson is currently on loan with the club until the end of December, with his contract in League Two set to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season – suggesting that a loan extension or a permanent switch remains on the cards.
How key could Anderson’s experience be to Carlisle’s promotion push?
Despite his drop down the footballing pyramid as well as his older age, Anderson has already proven to be making a significant impact both on and off the pitch for Carlisle and it is little surprise that their defensive performances have improved since his arrival.
Carlisle’s defensive line was certainly one of their biggest focus points this summer, building almost an entirely new defence after losing players due to expiring contracts and a likely financial effort to reduce player salaries after failing to seal an immediate return to the EFL.
The 33-year-old has made over 300 first-team appearances throughout his career so far, but has only enjoyed one piece of silverware, which came in June 2025 after Doncaster Rovers won promotion to League One.
Meanwhile, the club have made significant changes at the back from last seasons play-off exit, with a change coming between the sticks, a rebuilt defensive line and further depth in wide areas.
Elliot’s men have lost a lot of experience since the end of last season, but with the arrival of Anderson, could be a big step towards balancing out the squad and ensuring they can make it another step closer to the play-off places.
