Cardiff City may lose out on keeping Nathan Trott on a permanent basis as Championship clubs begin to show interest in the goalkeeper.

The Bermudan international has been a mainstay in Brian Barry-Murphy’s side this season, featuring in all but three of their League One games on top of five further appearances in cup competitions.

Bluebirds Hold Cards But Could Be Outflanked

As it stands Cardiff are in pole position to secure the 27-year-old on a permanent basis, with his initial loan clause from Danish giants FC Copenhagen allowing the Welsh side the option to recruit Trott should they wish.

However, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, agreeing a deal with Copenhagen has become difficult for the Bluebirds to secure, which has reportedly opened the doors for other Championship clubs to try and make a deal.

While City are on the verge of promotion back into the second tier with a healthy points cushion over third-placed Bolton Wanderers, their fate will not be sealed on Saturday unless they win against Reading and hope Stockport County drop points to relegation-threatened Exeter City.

Trott was a key player for Copenhagen last season, making 29 appearances, including 10 in the UEFA Conference League, but the signing of Croatian shot stopper Dominik Kotarski meant that minutes going forward would be limited, allowing the 27-year-old to move to South Wales.

Bluebirds Face Big Dilemma

With negotiations grinding to a halt for Cardiff City to secure Nathan Trott permanently, the question of whether it is right to keep pursuing their current goalkeeper is now up for debate.

While he has been part of a great side in League One, he is not a standout in key statistics, with players like George Wickens, Alex Bass and Bailey Peacock-Farrell being more prolific in the metrics.

Trott is a great distributor when called upon, and his return will keep together a good squad which may have fallen short in the title race but ultimately clinched a return to the Championship with ease.

Now, with other sides in the second tier looking at making a move for the 27-year-old, City must make a quick decision on whether to bite the bullet and meet Copenhagen’s demands or move on and try and find a suitable alternative over the summer.
