League One side Cambridge United are working to complete a deal for one of Wrexham’s out-of-favour players, ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
Following their promotion back to the third tier, the club have been busy bolstering their options to try and solidify their spot in League One for more than just a single campaign.
Despite picking up back-to-back wins to kick off their season, the club are winless in their previous three matches but still find themselves 10th in the table, ahead of Tuesday’s trip to high-flying Bradford City.
However, with the transfer window open for just over 24 hours – it isn’t necessarily surprising to see the club look at another potential incoming.
Cambridge eye Wrexham transfer swoop
Championship promotion-chasers Wrexham are set to allow several players to leave the football club on deadline day and one of those could be making his way to Cambridge.
Despite recruiting several additions, the club are short defensively at present and are set to turn their attentions onto Wrexham’s Aaron James.
According to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, Cambridge United are pressing hard to complete the loan signing of Wrexham’s Aaron James before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.
The 21-year-old has been out of favour with the Welsh side, featuring just once in the entirety of last season and spending time in the campaign prior with then-National League North side Warrington Town.
However, James has been involved for Wrexham in pre-season, featuring against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Leeds United.
Can he kickstart his career with Cambridge?
Since making his first-team debut for Wrexham in October 2023, James has struggled to make a lasting impression at the club – though he has also been a player who’s been the victim of the football club’s success in recent years.
When he made his debut, the club were a brand new League Two side, following their promotion from the National League in the previous campaign. However, the club have since sealed back-to-back promotions again and narrowly missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs last season.
Despite his limited minutes thus far, one of James’ best assets is his versatility – already playing as a left-back, right-back and centre-back throughout his career – which greatly increases Cambridge’s depth moving forward.
The 21-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Wrexham, suggesting that if James manages to hit the ground running in League One – it could set him up for a transfer next summer.
