Huddersfield Town are poised to seal an unexpected reunion on deadline day, after reaching an agreement with Premier League new-boys Ipswich Town.
The Terriers suffered defeat on penalties against Championship side Preston North End in the EFL Cup, but have since taken seven points from their first three league games and find themselves second in the League One standings via goal difference.
Martin Drury’s side left it late to beat Cambridge United on Saturday but remain in the hunt to secure promotion this season at the third attempt, after missing out on the top six in each of their last two campaigns.
In order to bolster their options further, Huddersfield have returned to the market in an attempt to strengthen themselves in the middle of the park.
Huddersfield to seal return of Premier League midfielder
Unsurprisingly, the disappointment of last season saw the club focus heavily on strengthening this summer – securing the likes of Ashley Fletcher, Matt Young and Ethan Brierley to ensure they don’t miss out on a Championship return this time around.
Those objectives are set to be strengthened further on deadline day, with the club set to land their latest recruit.
According to journalist Mike McGrath, Huddersfield Town are poised to complete the signing of Ipswich Town midfielder Cameron Humphreys, who will rejoin the football club once again.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a statement loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers during the 2024/25 season, contributing to 13 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions and was rewarded with a spot in Ipswich’s first-team squad for the upcoming season.
However, he was limited to just three league appearances and was eventually loaned out to Huddersfield for the second half of the season – where he contributed three times in 21 outings for the Terriers.
Humphreys is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Portman Road, but it is yet to be revealed as to whether his return to Huddersfield will be a loan or permanent switch – though is a player that is rated highly by manager Gary O’Neil.
How big of a signing is this?
Humphreys has had two standout spells in League One so far in his career, but is yet to be given the regular opportunity to shine in the Championship.
With the midfielder being out-of-contract next summer, there is an opportunity for the 22-year-old to experience another standout season in the third tier and increase the likelihood of him gaining that Championship opportunity in 12 months time – potentially with Huddersfield themselves if they come up.
Earlier this month, Humphreys grabbed an assist for Ipswich against Leicester City in the EFL Cup and made the bench for their Premier League victory over Sunderland.
Huddersfield have a handful of talented creative midfielders on their books, but one thing the majority of those lack is the knowledge of the division and despite being just 22, Humphreys brings a plethora of knowledge and quality to the Terriers.
Similarly, Humphreys’ arrival will improve the quality of Huddersfield’s midfield options for the duration of the campaign, strengthening themselves even further and giving them an edge in their matches – knowing they have the quality and depth to make tactical changes to win more matches in the league this season, something they’ve lacked in other campaigns.
Most noticeably, despite this being a new signing, Humphreys already knows the football club and majority of the players – meaning that unlike a regular addition, he will be able to hit the ground quicker than your average signing whilst also providing a big morale boost to the squad as a whole.
