Wealdstone have been slow starters in the National League thus far, but things could be about to change in the coming days.
The Stones reached the FA Trophy final, narrowly losing on penalties whilst also achieving their highest league finish in three seasons – spending the majority of the campaign in the top half of the table.
Unlike other National League clubs, Wealdstone have had a quieter start to their recruitment with only one new addition thus far, but things could be about to change.
Wealdstone eye goal-contributing midfielder
The Stones aren’t a traditional full-time side like the majority of their competitors, meaning young loanees and free agents are their main target traditionally.
With that in mind, their latest potential signing also follows that route – though is fresh off the back of a successful individual season in the National League.
According to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, Wealdstone are keen to complete a deal for departed Sutton United midfielder Jayden Harris this summer.
Harris contributed to ten goals across all competitions for Sutton United last season, though it wasn’t enough to see his contract extended ahead of next season.
The Stones aren’t thought to be alone in their pursuit of the midfielder, with several other National League sides believed (according to O’Rourke) to be interested.
Elsewhere, experienced midfielder Ash Yearwood is also on trial with the Stones – something that was also reported by O’Rourke – though he too has interest from other fifth tier sides.
How key could Harris be for Wealdstone?
The 26-year-old was an ever-present figure for Sutton United last season, featuring 42 times across all competitions with six goals and four assists to his name.
However, in the league alone he started 28 of his 40 outings – suggesting he wasn’t necessarily as ‘key’ as his appearance numbers would suggest, though was still a part of their side under Chris Agutter.
Harris predominantly plays off the left-hand side of the attack, a position that was often taken up by Anthony Georgiou or loanee Terrell Agyemang – both of which have left the club already this summer.
Wealdstone often fluctuate between a back four and a back five, which means Harris likely needs to be able to play as a winger or be able to cover at wing-back. Fortunately, he’s played both roles with Sutton and would be a direct replacement though this time he’s permanent.
Similarly, Wealdstone ended the season in disappointing circumstances both with their form and their defeat at Wembley – therefore, adding an experienced creator off the back of a good individual season would be a good addition.
Defender Joe Newton has already joined from Boreham Wood earlier this summer as a left-back, suggesting Harris will operate further forward.
