Bristol Rovers will keep hold of manager Steve Evans after reports linking the veteran manager to the vacancy at Scottish Premiership side Hibernian were shot down.
The Easter Road club are on the hunt for a new leader in the wake of David Gray’s sacking earlier this week, after a less-than-ideal start to the season, including four losses in their opening six league games.
Evans Stays Put
Since the removal of Gray in Edinburgh, several names have been floated as potential successors to guide Hibs forward, and in a report from Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke yesterday, they were preparing an approach to Bristol Rovers for Steve Evans.
The 63-year-old has come good on his nine-month-long rebuild of the Pirates since taking over in the South West, and has overseen a promising start to the campaign which has Rovers joint-top of League Two alongside Barnet.
However, in an update from the Edinburgh Evening News, in an article addressing Hibernian’s interest in St Johnstone chief Simo Valakari, it was confirmed that Evans is not a candidate for the role.
It is believed that the Hibbees can expect to appoint a manager during the international break, with a three-week break ahead of the club after their home match against Aberdeen tomorrow.
Evans meanwhile is setting up for a clash against one of his former sides in Gillingham on the road, in an attempt to redeem themselves after a second league defeat of the season against Grimsby Town.
Non-Starter Move Confirmed
It was perhaps a surprise link that Hibernian were going to try and bring in Steve Evans to fill their managerial vacancy, and now it has been confirmed that it was in fact a non-starter to begin with.
The 63-year-old has been very committed into trying to revitalise a Bristol Rovers side that have been sliding constantly towards the abyss, and after clearing out a squad he was not satisfied with when first arriving, has now got them firing on all cylinders.
It may have been a nice chance for him to finally manage in his native Scotland, but with no consideration from Hibernian, it seems that move will not materialise any time soon, keeping him focused on the task at hand at the Mem.
The squad he has built have already delivered some promising results, and if they can maintain their efforts heading towards Christmas, then they will surely be a favourite to clinch promotion back to League One.
