Tamworth’s takeover has been officially approved, with preparations for the 2026/27 season beginning, but those plans have left one of their standout talents facing an uncertain future.

The Lambs are one of the only non-full time sides in the National League, but have secured back-to-back top half finishes in the division, whilst also taking Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur to extra time in their FA Cup clash.

New owner Abdullah Ashraf has already addressed supporters via a live fan forum event, where he revealed his aspirations for the football club – both short and long term, including plans to become a full-time professional side as well as purchasing their stadium.

However, those plans are focussed on off-field matters – but on it, Andy Peaks’ side have began their plans for next season with their retained list now unveiled.

Tamworth star faces uncertain future

As mentioned, Tamworth were the only side that hadn’t released their retained list – until Monday afternoon when the futures of several players were confirmed.

Experienced midfielder Tom Tonks has already confirmed his departure from the football club, whilst plenty of players including Dan Creaney, Jas Singh and Haydn Hollis have been confirmed as staying for another season.

Elsewhere, one key player that hasn’t been mentioned anywhere by the club is forward Stefan Mols. The Spaniard joined Tamworth from Curzon Ashton last summer, signing a one-year contract but is yet to confirm his future.

Mols made 50 appearances across all competitions for the Lambs last season, scoring 13 goals whilst also providing three assists, averaging out at just under one goal contribution every three matches.

However, his future remains uncertain – though there is a valid argument that his performances for Tamworth have been enough to warrant a move to a full-time side, something that the Lambs currently can’t offer Mols.

Where could Mols go next if he does depart?

It is important to remember that despite Mols not being mentioned as a retained player, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will be leaving the football club – he could be in contract talks or have an offer on the table but is assessing all his options.

However, the 27-year-old has just experienced his best season to date in terms of output at a high level, which could tempt him into wanting to move into full time football and test himself even further next season.

On the outside, seeing a player in the fifth tier contributing to 16 goals would lead to some immediately suggesting a move to the EFL, and whilst that could happen – there is an argument that Mols is yet to challenge himself in a full-time National League side.

Ultimately, Tamworth aren’t a full-time side yet which suggests that if Mols was to target that field, he would need to leave the Lambs this summer. In terms of a future destination, location could play a key factor – with Mols playing the majority of his career in the North with the likes of Warrington, Blackburn Rovers and Curzon Ashton.

Therefore, sides like Barrow, Rochdale, Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers could be ideal destinations for the 27-year-old, should he wish to return closer to his old home this summer.
