Wolverhampton Wanderers have appointed a new head of women and girls’ football ahead of the 26/27 season as they head into the WSL2 for the first time.
The club have announced that Russ Fraser will manage the women’s game for the club, in a return to the UK after a recent stint in the Middle East.
A Decorated Career
Fraser has worked for ten years in the women’s game, having earned a penchant for guiding teams to promotion and bringing smooth transitions into professional football.
He began his career in football with Reading in 2016, guiding the newly promoted team to a secure spot in the Women’s Super League. He also delivered West Ham to an FA Cup final during their first professional season.
The Brit has also supported teams to promotion, such as with Leicester City, who were promoted to the WSL in his first season with the club. His most recent campaign in the WSL2 saw Liverpool secure promotion back into the top tier for the two-time champions.
Fraser comes to Wolves from Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia, acting as women’s sporting director for the past four seasons. Speaking upon his arrival in the West Midlands, he stated:
“It’s a really exciting opportunity. There are a lot of similarities with Liverpool in that the club’s really important to what goes on in the city, and there’s good people here, so I think we can develop a really good football programme here over the next three to five seasons.
“Macca and I seem very aligned in the way we see things, and the players we’re looking at, and I was really pleased with Compton Park as a facility, because there’s real interaction between the men’s and women’s groups – it’s a pack mentality, and that is massive when you’re trying to build an environment.

“This first season the biggest challenge is getting the right people in, staff and players, but it’s also an opportunity. If you look at my career at different clubs, I love a project, that’s what lights my fire, and there’s a great opportunity here, so I can’t wait to get going.”
Much Needed Experience for Wolves
Bringing experience into the women and girls’ area of the club is vital as the Wolverhampton Wanderers women’s team enter a new professional age for the first time, and Russ Fraser will be crucial to that transition.
Establishing themselves within the WSL2 will be one of their biggest goals next season, which Fraser has proven his ability in across his career so far.
