York City owner Matt Uggla has publicly rejected a reported bid from Sheffield Wednesday for striker Josh Stones.
The Minstermen’s talisman has become a beloved figure in North Yorkshire since his arrival in January 2025, with 25 goals in 65 appearances helping the club back into the EFL under Stuart Maynard.
Uggla Speaks Out Following Report
However, Stones’ future was briefly thrown into doubt after a report from Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke stated that League One newcomers Sheffield Wednesday had submitted a ‘significant offer’ for the 22-year-old.
Interest from the third tier has been frequent for the striker, with January seeing a host of EFL sides, including his former club in Wigan Athletic, show interest in signing Stones before being shut down by City owner Matt Uggla.
Now, in response to O’Rourke’s report, the 31-year-old has quashed those links, stating:

Wednesday have been looking at a whole host of players as they hope to bolster their ranks in their first transfer window after Dejphon Chansiri’s ousting at Hillsborough.
While they have missed out on key target Kyreece Lisbie to League One rivals Reading, they are still keen on adding new forward options with reports linking them to Huddersfield Town’s Joe Taylor.
Wednesday Faces Uphill Task
As much as they are keen on signing Josh Stones, they face the unenviable task of trying to convince Matt Uggla to sell his favourite player, having previously been bullish about past interest in Josh Stones.
A key figure in their promotion campaign, the 22-year-old is primed to be their star as they look to compete in League Two, with their own coffers boosted after the £750,000 sale of Malachi Fagan-Walcott to Hearts.
Furthermore, the Owls will have further contention if this interest is to continue, with January revealing that Wigan Athletic do have a first refusal option on Stones as part of the deal which saw him head to York.
Considering those factors, unless they come back with an offer that is too good to refuse, Uggla will bat away any further interest in Josh Stones from any potential suitors.
