Reading Receive Major Boost Ahead Of Plymouth Argyle Clash

Reading have received a major boost ahead of their huge League One clash against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday after it was revealed that striker Jack Marriott is back in first team training after an extended lay-off.

The 32-year-old has endured an injury hit time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium since joining from Wrexham in August 2025. He hit 16 goals in 23 league outings last season before an injury effectively curtailed his campaign in February, where he made just one brief cameo appearance against Cardiff City in April.

Having returned to full fitness over the summer, Marriott began this season in electric form. He bagged eight goals in the opening seven games, including a hat trick against former club Luton Town on the opening day.

The attacker picked up an injury against Wycombe Wanderers at the end of September, which has ruled him out of the last five games. However, it appears as if he is edging closer to a return after being spotted in an opening training session earlier today.

Marriott’s Timely Return

Reading have enjoyed an excellent opening quarter of the season and currently sit fifth in League One following last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Barnsley. As a result, they are now just two points behind second-placed Stockport County.

Leam Richardson’s side will move further up the table this weekend with another victory. A trip to Plymouth awaits, with the Pilgrims having moved up to fourth following their 3-2 triumph over Cambridge United on Saturday.

It remains to be seen as to whether Marriott will be a part of the travelling squad, but he would be a fabulous option to have on the bench if required.

Leam Richardson’s Dilemma

Marriott’s return to training will represent somewhat of a dilemma for Richardson. He will no doubt be keen to get his talisman back in the team as soon as possible but he will be mindful about rushing him back.

The ankle ligament injury that he has recently been nursing is one that can flare up again and with his injury troubles over recent years, clearly another setback would be detrimental to the team. That said, a win over Plymouth would be a huge lift to Reading’s early promotion aspirations.

It is a tricky one though. If the ex-Peterborough United star is fit enough to be included, he should be. That doesn’t mean he needs to be used, but if the Royals are chasing the game with 10 minutes remaining, there are fewer better options in the division.

With a lot of games on the horizon, his minutes will undoubtedly be managed. It is a conundrum, but one that Richardson will be wary of.
