Luton Town Boss Addresses Post-Match Barnsley Scuffle

Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere has said that his post-match confrontation with Barnsley‘s Daniel Stendel was ‘just passion’.

The Hatters were able to eke out a 2-1 win over the struggling Tykes, with Mads Andersen and Nakhi Wells sealing a first-half lead which proved to be unassailable for the Yorkshire club at Kenilworth Road.

That led to some tasty scenes after the whistle, in which Wilshere appeared to shove away the German boss after their initial handshake on the touchline.

Wilshere Plays Down Incident

Speaking to the press following the result, which saw Town move up to 13th place in the League One table, Jack Wilshere was asked about the melee. (Quotes via The Lutonian):

“Nothing but respect for them. At the end, we shook hands and it’s just passion. I want to win. He wants to win and that’s that. He just grabbed my hand. I think he wants to win. I want to win. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and his team.

“I watched them over the last few days, probably four or five games I’ve watched them and they haven’t got the results that they wanted, but they’re a good team and you can see that they’ve got threat.

“We have to be respectful and we are and they [Barnsley] were as well, in my opinion, but also sometimes you can see their togetherness in those moments where we wanted to win so badly and we’ve got each other’s back.”

The win against Barnsley marks a key turnaround for the Bedfordshire side, having stumbled at the weekend against local rivals MK Dons and will face a huge test against a newly rejuvenated Leicester City.

Emotions Tempered Following Important Win

It was a pivotal game for both Barnsley and Luton Town on Tuesday, and with a result going in the way of the hosts, it was only natural that some frustrations would come out.

It has been a horrid start to the season for the Tykes, and with sides around them picking up points, the pressure is starting to ramp up for them to deliver key results in the short term.

The post-match scenes at Kenilworth Road only exemplify that there is now some need for a U-turn in Barnsley’s form, and with Reading and Oxford United on the horizon, results are needed now before a tough run which includes two key derbies against Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday.

For Luton, it was the perfect result after the disappointment of MK Dons and keeps alive their promotion hopes in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race for the top six.
