Swindon Town has committed to fulfilling its upcoming league fixtures against Fleetwood Town and Cambridge United on their scheduled dates, despite facing the reality of being without three key players who have been called up for international duty.
True to his word, manager Ian Holloway, who previously expressed his preference to stick to the pre-planned fixture list should his players receive call-ups from their national teams, has delivered on that promise with the Robins’ latest decision.
Fuelled by back-to-back away victories in League Two, Swindon has reignited its automatic promotion hopes and is eager to capitalize on this momentum in the crucial fixtures ahead.
The televised crunch clash against Cambridge United next Thursday evening promises to be vital in shaping both sides’ fate, as a huge night at the Abbey Stadium will proceed as anticipated.
International Trio Diminishes Swindon Options
Junior Hoilett, James Scanlon, and Filozofe Mabete have all been summoned by their respective national teams and will certainly be absent for the game against Fleetwood Town at the County Ground this weekend.
Undoubtedly, Hoilett’s absence will leave the biggest void, especially following the 35-year-old’s vital stoppage-time winner against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday. The experienced former Premier League winger will represent Canada in their upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia, leaving the Robins without his creative influence.
They will also be without the services of midfielder James Scanlon and defender Mabete, who will represent Gibraltar and DR Congo Under 23s, respectively.
In accordance with EFL regulations, it was Swindon’s prerogative to request the postponement of their matches, owing to the circumstance of having three players summoned during a single international window. However, the Wiltshire outfit has made the brave decision to proceed with their remaining squad, with momentum set to be a pivotal factor in a fierce race for automatic promotion.
Swindon Refuse To Lose Ground
Unlike Swindon Town, their rivals ahead of them have emerged from the international break largely unscathed, boasting squads at near full strength for the weekend. By choosing to play despite squad depletion, they have ensured they can immediately respond to results from Cambridge and Notts County, seizing the opportunity to keep pace rather than risk falling behind and being left with potentially pressured games in hand.
In contrast, Grimsby Town, sitting two places and seven points behind, have opted to postpone their two matches this week following international call-ups for three regulars. While the rest of the Mariners squad gains a valuable two-week respite, they now face a daunting fixture pile-up in early April, a sequence that could ultimately define their play-off aspirations.
In comments published by the Swindon Advertiser, Holloway defiantly revealed his trust in his remaining players to handle the Fleetwood match effectively, despite the absence of their departing teammates.
“I couldn’t be prouder of my football club if I tried… I have three players going off to international duty, but I want to play the game, and so that is what we will be doing.”
Never one to mince words, the 63-year-old has consistently voiced his opinion on the matter, previously labelling Notts County’s decision to postpone their game against Swindon earlier in the season as ‘absolute nonsense’.
The experienced gaffer, who began his managerial career in 1996, has navigated the trickiest of situations during his illustrious career in English football. Holloway seems determined to utilise that wisdom and maintain a psychological level playing field as they approach the final stretch, fostering as stable an environment as possible for his players to secure the desired result of promotion.
