Plymouth Argyle are set to receive a huge boost with head coach Tom Cleverley confirmed two new signings are set to be confirmed early next week.

The Pilgrims have endured a tricky start to the new season. They suffered defeat in their first league game of the season when Stockport County left Home Park with a 3-1 victory. That was followed by yesterday’s trip to Wycombe Wanderers, which ended in a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw.

The trip to Adams Park saw Cleverley suffer yet more injury heartbreak when Malachi Boateng picked up a knee injury after just nine minutes. The midfielder now joins Michael Baidoo, Jack MacKenzie, Owen Oseni and Freddie Issaka om the treatment table, whilst Brendan Wiredu’s transfer to Salford City leaves Plymouth short of numbers in the middle of the park.

Reinforcements Set To Bolster Plymouth Squad

Plymouth entertain Premier League newcomers on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup second round, where they could have a couple of new faces within their ranks. Cleverley has already added seven new members to his squad this summer, although he has had to contend with the departure of talisman Lorent Tolaj.

Speaking after yesterday’s draw, the former Manchester United and England midfielder delivered an update on the imminent transfers:

“They should both happen Monday, I’m fairly confident of that.

“Obviously there will be a midfielder coming in and a wide player. Medicals took place last evening. It’s much easier to do them when you are up in Wycombe. Deals should be announced Monday.”

Plymouth Need Signings To Hit The Ground Running

Although it’s still very early days, Plymouth fans will be hoping that can start picking up the points in the coming weeks. Last season’s slow start is still fresh in the memory, especially as they were in and around the relegation places until the turn of the year.

An incredibly strong finish saw the Pilgrims surge up the table, eventually missing out on a place in the play-offs by just two points. Despite that, it was certainly a case of ‘what might have been’ for Cleverley’s side.

They face a Bradford City side on Saturday who boast the only 100% record in the division. The Bantams have picked up maximum points against Peterborough United and Sheffield Wednesday thus far.

Therefore, it is imperative for the Devon-based side that the new arrivals hit the ground running, especially in midfield. Another home defeat would leave them eight points behind Bradford after just three games and facing yet another season of playing catch up.
