Reading are keen on Wrexham defender Dan Scarr and are ready to make a move before the transfer window closes on September 1st, according to reports.
The Royals kicked off their League One campaign last Saturday in what arguably turned out to be the game of the weekend. They welcomed Luton Town to the Select Car Leasing Stadium hoping to get their season up and running with a bang.
A first half hat trick from Jack Marriott saw them enter the half time break 3-1 up. However, two goals from Kasey Palmer and an added time winner from Gideon Kodua saw Jack Wilshere’s team steal a 4-3 victory at the death.
Reading have reacted by pulling off a coup in the form of George Earthy, who joined on a three-year deal from West Ham United earlier this week. The playmaker becomes the latest addition this summer following the arrivals of Jacob Brown, Kyreece Lisbie, Udoka Godwin-Malife and Josh Stokes.
Reading Plan Wrexham Raid
Last weekend’s loss highlighted the need to bring in at least one defensive recruit before the end of the transfer window. 18-year-old Ashqar Ahmed was the only player capable of playing across the back line amongst the substitutes against Luton.
According to Football Insider, Wrexham centre-back Dan Scarr has emerged as a target. However, Leam Richardson’s side are likely to face competition from a number of clubs within the EFL.
The 31-year-old joined the Red Dragons from Plymouth Argyle in 2024, penning a three-year deal. He has mainly played a back-up role during his stint in North Wales though, making just 44 appearances in all competitions since his arrival.
He has yet to feature for Phil Parkinson’s team this season and was an unused substitute against both Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup and Monday night’s 1-1 Championship draw against Cardiff City. It is unclear as to whether any potential deal will be a temporary or permanent move, although with Scarr’s contract set to expire next summer, Wrexham may be hoping to land a fee.
More Defensive Recruits Ahead?
Whilst Reading will be hoping to conclude a deal for Scarr, he is unlikely to be the last defensive player to arrive over the course of the next couple of weeks. Previous reports claim that Richardson is hoping to secure two additions in this area whilst also targeting another striker.
Despite that, manager Richardson and chairman Rob Couhig remain aligned that they will only bring in the right players. The former Rotherham United boss addressed the situation earlier this month:
“You’ve got to be really mindful of who you add to the group.
“We could sign three players tomorrow, today, if we really wanted to, but that’s not what we want. We want to sign the right three players, so sometimes it takes a little more time.
“There’s a lot of moving parts, as you can imagine, but we’ll stay strong to our beliefs, we’ll stay strong to what we want because that will only benefit us in the future.”
Reading return to league action tomorrow when they travel to the capital to face AFC Wimbledon.
