Peterborough United have confirmed that defender Lucca Mendonca has signed a new four-year contract, committing his long-term future to the club.
The 18-year-old has been rewarded after breaking into the first-team picture this season, with the club moving quickly to secure his development.
Young defender commits future
Mendonca, who made his first league start earlier in the campaign against Stevenage, has agreed terms on a deal that keeps him at the club for the foreseeable future. His inclusion in that match came at short notice due to illness within the squad, but he delivered a performance that underlined his potential.
The defender expressed his satisfaction at extending his stay, pointing to the environment around him as a key factor in his decision.
“I am really happy to commit my future to the club, I believe that I am in the right place to continue my development.
“At the start of the season, my aim was to make my first start for the club and I have featured in seven games in all competitions, so I am happy that I have managed to do that and also play regularly for the Under 21s.”
His involvement has not been limited to senior football, with regular appearances for the Under 21s providing further opportunities to test himself against a range of opponents.
Development pathway remains key
Mendonca highlighted the value of those experiences, particularly when facing players with top-level pedigree in development fixtures.
“The Under 21s has been really enjoyable because I am being tested by different types of players and opposition.
“I remember coming up against Igor Thiago when we played Brentford and he is obviously now scoring lots of goals in the first team and playing for Brazil, so you do get really big players playing in those games sometimes.”
His senior involvement began earlier in the season, making his first appearance from the bench in the Carabao Cup tie against Accrington Stanley in August. He also featured in all three Vertu Trophy group stage matches, building experience across multiple competitions.
Typical Peterborough United
Over the years, Posh have become a beacon for lower league clubs. They turned a profit, unlike almost every other EFL club, and that comes from player trading. That is often a player who has come through their academy, with the likes of Ricky Jade-Jones and Harrison Burrows.
Their academy also churns out good players who don’t always make it at Posh or go on to make millions. Carl Piergianni, Harry Anderon and Jordan Roberts are all solid EFL players who were built in Peterborough.
It’s a good academy and a great club for giving youth a chance, and Mendonca is surely in the best place to help advance his career, whether he ends up at the top end of the pyramid or not.
