Boreham Wood beat Sutton United two-nil on Friday evening to extend their unbeaten run to 13 league matches and move ten points clear at the top, but how does their start compare to some of the best sides in National League history?
Since their match on Friday, Southend United beat Boston United to maintain their unbeaten record and close the gap back to seven points.
The club are the only side in the division that are yet to lose in any of their 13 matches, picking up 11 wins and scoring an impressive 34 goals in the process – with Zak Brunt contributing to 19 of them.
On the National League Lowdown Podcast, the hosts discussed Boreham Wood in further detail, with Louis in particular highlighting that they have made the greatest start to a league season for some time.
He stated…
“Best side we’ve seen in the National League for a significant number of years. I went back through the history books, 32 points from 12 games (now 35 in 13), that is the best that a team has started the season since before the 2012/13 season… the only team that came close was Chesterfield’s 31 points in the 2023/24 season.”
Some of the standout sides in recent years have been York City & Rochdale’s 2025/26 teams, Barnet’s 2024/25 side and the thrilling 2022/23 title race between Wrexham & Notts County.
However, where does Boreham Wood’s start rank amongst the best recent teams in National League history?
Boreham Wood’s statistical start thus far:
After 13 league games thus far, Luke Garrard’s side now have 35 points to their name, dropping just four points all season in draws against Eastleigh and Tamworth.
April 2026 was the last time Boreham Wood lost a league game, during a 4-1 defeat away to Solihull Moors, though on home soil they remain unbeaten since January – when they were defeated by Boston United having been reduced to nine-men.
In the league alone, Boreham Wood have averaged just one goal conceded per 90 minutes, whilst scoring 2.6 goals in the process – with their draw to Eastleigh being the only time they’ve scored fewer than two goals in a single National League fixture.
Currently, Garrard’s men have a points per game (PPG) average of 2.69. Therefore, over a 46-game season on this current trajectory, Boreham Wood are expected to finish on 124 points, having conceded just 46 goals and scored a jaw-dropping 123 goals.
Therefore, with those numbers in mind, where do Boreham Wood rank statistically against some of the other standout sides?
How does their start compare to some of the best ever teams?
If Boreham Wood finish the season with over 100 points, they’ll become the tenth side to achieve this fate – though only seven of these sides have won the league, with Notts County and Rochdale finishing as runners-up. Though the two latter sides didn’t win the league, their starts will still be compared.
The nine sides in question are;
- 2010/11 Crawley Town – 105 points
- 2011/12 Fleetwood Town – 103 points
- 2013/14 Luton Town – 101 points
- 2015/16 Cheltenham Town – 101 points
- 2022/23 Wrexham AFC – 111 points
- 2022/23 Notts County – 107 points (runners-up)
- 2024/25 Barnet FC – 102 points
- 2025/26 York City – 108 points
- 2025/26 Rochdale AFC – 106 points (runners-up)
Points gained after 13 matches:
After 13 league games, Boreham Wood have made the best recorded start to a National League season with their 35 points, two better than Rochdale’s 2025/26 start and intriguingly six better than Wrexham’s 2022/23 team that recorded the highest points total in recent history.
Of all the recent title winners, Luton Town had the worst start to a season, taking just 23 points from their opening 13 games, but went on to finish on 101 points. Though not covered, Chesterfield’s 2023/24 season didn’t reach the three-figure points total – though they had 32 points from their opening 13 games.
Goals scored after 13 matches:
Out of all of the standout sides, only Wrexham’s title-winning side have scored more goals after 13 league games than Boreham Wood have. Phil Parkinson’s side scored 38 goals during their start, whilst Boreham Wood are slightly behind with 34 – though are three higher than the next side.
Elsewhere, Luton unsurprisingly have scored the fewest amount of goals with 19 – and even York City‘s attack last season only had 28 goals at this point.
Goals conceded after 13 matches:
If there is one criticism of Boreham Wood’s start, it is the number of goals they have conceded in comparison to some of the other standout sides. Garrard’s men have conceded 13 times across their 13 matches so far, with three of them coming on the opening weekend of the season.
However, despite this being just one per game, they rank seventh – six more than Rochdale’s eye-catching start last season. Though Luton have ranked bottom for both points gained and goals scored, they had conceded just nine times by this stage.
Other points:
Interestingly, Boreham Wood are the only side that remain unbeaten in league competition after 13 matches in comparison to all the other standout National League sides in recent history.
Therefore, Boreham Wood are currently on course to end the season with the best attack and best points total that the division has ever seen, whilst also being the only side still to remain unbeaten at this stage of a season across all of the benchmark standout sides in the division’s recent history.
Similarly, after selling winger Abdul Abdulmalik, Garrard’s side have the finances as well as the squad depth to go on and lodge a strong title push this season and if they were to maintain their current form all season, they would go down as the best side statistically in the league’s history.
