Former Barnet FC defender Will Wright has signed a three-year deal at Boreham Wood as Luke Garrard continues to strengthen his squad.

The 6ft 4in centre-back has been a regular in the EFL for the last four seasons. That includes a 48-game spell with Crawley Town. Wright missed just one league game as the Red Devils went on to win promotion in front of 33,000 at Wembley. That year’s play-off campaign included a memorable 8-1 demolition of MK Dons.

Now back in the National League, Wright believes he has joined a club with clear ambitions of returning to the Football League.

Speaking to Boreham Wood after completing his move, Wright said:

“It’s all very exciting. It’s obviously a very exciting time for the club and for the fans. Hopefully the club can go one better, and hopefully I’m here to help that, and we can achieve the obvious goal the club has set out.”

The Wood have made an impressive start to the National League campaign and currently sit top of the table, with the Hertfordshire side still unbeaten.

The club have also been busy in the transfer market, with Garrard adding several players to his squad in recent weeks. Ted Curd, Jay Bird, Ben Whitfield and Conor Wilkinson have all arrived on loan, with Whitfield making an immediate impact after scoring four goals in his first four games.

Record Breaking Boreham Wood

The side have also been involved in a major transfer saga surrounding forward Abdul Abdulmalik. Djurgårdens eventually agreed a deal worth more than £1.5 million for the 23-year-old, a fee that broke the previous National League transfer record.

That increased backing has allowed the Wood to continue investing in their squad, with Wright becoming the latest addition as the club target another promotion push. For Barnet, Wright’s departure brings an end to a frustrating spell at the Hive.

The defender made just four league appearances this season, playing only 33 minutes. He had been used in central midfield under Dean Brennan, but competition for places in defence, including the presence of Danny Collinge, restricted his opportunities.

A move across London therefore provides Wright with the chance to play more regularly, while Boreham Wood gain an experienced defender with significant EFL and National League experience. The three-year contract also represents a significant commitment from the promotion hopefuls and their owner Danny Hunter.

Wright will now look to establish himself at Meadow Park and play a part in a promotion campaign that could see Boreham Wood return to the EFL. The Wood are going from strength to strength, and at the moment it doesn’t look like anyone will stop them.
