Huddersfield Town have completed the signing of Dutch right‑back Ilias Bronkhorst on a free transfer.
The 29‑year‑old joins on a two‑year deal at the Accu Stadium after leaving Eredivisie side Excelsior at the end of last season. He arrives with a heap of experience from spells at Koninklijke NFC, Telstar, FC Dordrecht and NEC Nijmegen to add crucial depth and quality to Huddersfield’s defensive unit.
Excitement Aplenty
“Ilias has lots of interesting qualities that make him an exciting signing for the club. He’s athletic and has physical capabilities that align with how we want to play. He’s coming from a league that requires you to be technically good, but alongside this, his contributions to set plays, both attacking and defending, were impressive,” Terriers manager Martin Drury explained.
“Importantly, we could feel his hunger and excitement for what we’re trying to build here at Huddersfield Town. That’s vital to see in any player we bring to the club.”
Versatility and Experience Vital
Primarily operating as a right‑back or right wing‑back but also capable of playing on the wing or in central defence, the Dutchman will provide his boss with plenty of tactical flexibility as to how best to deploy him.
Arriving with over 200 professional games under his belt, his words upon his unveiling display his delight with his move, which was held up by a visa delay.
“I’m really happy to be here. I had to wait five days for my visa, but finally we have made it, and I can go out on the pitch and train with the guys, and hopefully we will have a successful season,” he insisted.
“Huddersfield are a big club who have big ambitions, so I am happy to be here.”
Multifaceted Utility
Eager to attack the challenge of stamping his mark in League One with gusto in the physically demanding English third tier, he stated how he believes his strength in the duels, aerial prowess, attacking threat and long throws will hold him in good stead to hit the ground running.
Only time will tell how he fares and how smoothly he’ll integrate, but on the surface, this appears a smart piece of business by Huddersfield to bolster their squad ahead of a massive campaign.
