League One sides are reportedly keen on making a move for winger Sammy Silvera following his release from Middlesbrough.
The Australian international was one of six senior players released by Kim Hellberg’s side in the wake of their playoff final loss to Hull City, bringing an end to a three-year spell on Teesside.
Third Tier Spell On The Cards
According to Daniel Marsh of the Daily Mirror, Silvera is in demand this summer with his contract at the Riverside at the end of the month, with interest from within England and abroad.
The winger struggled for regular minutes for Boro this season, playing just over 1,000 minutes in the Championship and making just eight starts, the majority of which coming under previous manager Rob Edwards.
It is believed that ‘ambitious’ League One sides, in addition to some other Championship clubs are interested in signing the 25-year-old, along with some international interest from the United States’ Major League Soccer.
Having gained League One experience with Blackpool for a six-month loan spell in 2025 on top of a separate stint at Portsmouth earlier that campaign, Silvera has struggled to make an impact across recent seasons.
Which Clubs Should Look At Silvera?
Despite some struggles for regular game time at Middlesbrough over the past two years, Sammy Silvera will still fancy himself to challenge for a place in a Championship club’s plans next season.
However, whether a team in the second tier will want to take a risk on someone with waning returns is still up in the air, meaning that making the jump to a different league is surely on the cards.
Many League One clubs are in a chase for another winger this summer with five actively targeting Colchester United’s Kyreece Lisbie, and with some set for disappointment, aiming for a more experienced face like Silvera could be a wise alternative.
Reading is one of those, and with new sides with higher budgets in a stronger position to sign Lisbie, Silvera could prove to be a viable replacement, given he is similarly versatile on either flank.
The best option for Silvera though is a switch to the MLS, with a higher wage budget than what can be offered in England, and has been seen with other players like Sam Surridge, EFL players can thrive in the United States.
