Hartlepool United have been busy in the transfer window thus far, with conversations regarding potential new recruits continuing, but one player’s current future has been addressed during a recent interview.
The Pools have already secured the likes of Jack Nolan (Morecambe) and Jordan Hugill (Rotherham) to kickstart their preparations for the 2026/27 season, but work is set to continue in the coming weeks.
Since relegation from the EFL in May 2023, Hartlepool have now played over 100 league games in the hope of returning to League Two but are yet to come close.
Manager confirms stance regarding Hartlepool target
Hartlepool (as mentioned) have been busy in the transfer window thus far, with several players being lined up. One rumoured arrival was former Rotherham United winger Duncan Watmore, but those reports were shut down in recent weeks.
However, one name across social media that isn’t going away is Halifax Town forward Will Harris – with the club said to be admirers of the striker ahead of next season.
Those reports have been addressed by Shaymen manager John McGrath, who told the Halifax Courier…
“That’s as it was. We’re all involved in a team squad WhatsApp group and they’ve all had their inputs in that in the last couple of days, saying they’re looking forward to getting back into training and ‘see you all soon boys’.
“I’ve added the newer boys to that group. Will’s one I’m really looking forward to working closely with, he’s an exceptionally gifted young footballer, he’s a talented footballer.
“Does he belong in the National League? Probably not. I’m lucky to be working with him but Will’s destiny will be Football League, hopefully Championship and beyond.
“He’s a dedicated young man who wants to better himself and progress, but as we sit here now, he’s a Halifax Town player.”
The 25-year-old scored 22 goals and provided four additional assists across their 43 National League outings last season, whilst also scoring regularly in their domestic cup competitions too.
How likely are Hartlepool’s chances of signing Harris?
There have been reports of uncertainty regarding Harris’ contract status at Halifax and whether his one-year option was triggered before the suggested deadline – which will likely play a big factor in Hartlepool’s chances.
Harris evidently has ambitious of reaching the EFL and going as high as he can in the English football pyramid, with his current form from the previous season suggesting he may look to move this summer whilst he’s on form.
However, if he is under contract at Halifax, it would mean a fee is required and that could rule Hartlepool out of the running if EFL clubs come calling instead.
On the flip side, the fee could see EFL clubs go against a potential transfer due to the increased risk, which would place into the Pools’ hands this summer.
With the Pools, Harris would continue to receive a lot of starts/minutes, further aiding him to continue where he left off last season – or he could risk it and move into the EFL this summer.
Alternatively, Halifax are also under new management this summer and McGrath could place himself in the role of persuading Harris to fend off interest and stick by the Shaymen for the 2026/27 season, as they themselves target promotion.
Ultimately, Harris’ ongoing contract situation will play a key role in how likely it is that Hartlepool sign him this summer, though given they have already beaten EFL opposition to the signing of Nolan – they certainly have a chance at repeating history once again.
