Huddersfield Town are preparing their team for a tough League One campaign next season and are set to make one key signing.
19-year-old goalkeeper Matty Young may have extended his deal at Sunderland last month, but he is likely to head out on loan again next season.
Several League One clubs have been credited with an interest in him. Sky Sports News reported that recently relegated sides Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City.
Despite interest from those two sides, it appears Huddersfield Town will win the race to sign the young keeper on loan.
Matty Young Set for Huddersfield Town
On his Patreon, Alan Nixon has shared Huddersfield Town will sign Young ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The goalie spent last season on loan at League Two play-off finalists, Salford City. His performances there led to a new long-term deal at Sunderland.
Young Catches the Eye
Young played 44 games last season for Salford City while on loan at the fourth-tier club. He had played 20 games the season before, impressing the hierarchy and earning a loan move back to the club.
He received an average Sofascore rating of 7.12 for his performances in League Two, the second-highest rating in the Ammies squad.
Young ended the season with 2.7 saves per game, 118 in total. Young also conceded just 1.1 goals per game, 48 in total.
The Sunderland prospect also saved two of the five penalties he faced in League Two.
As well as catching the eye with his saves, Young picked up one assist in the league in Salford’s game against Fleetwood Town.
Young went route one with the ball, and when the bounce caught out the Fleetwood Town defender, Kelly N’Mai found himself through on goal and found the back of the net.
Is He Ready for the Step-Up?
From his performances last season, it is clear that Young is more than comfortable as a first-choice goalkeeper in the EFL.
The question is whether he is ready for the step-up to the third tier.
With some fallen giants in League One next season, he will come up against some experienced forwards.
He will also have a new level of pressure to manage. Salford were pushing for promotion from League Two, but the pressure and responsibility of being the first choice for a team pushing for promotion to the second tier will be a big challenge for him.
His numbers last season suggest he is ready for the step up, but it will be a steep learning curve for Young.
