Huddersfield Town Win Seven-Figure Race For Winger

Huddersfield Town are set to secure the services of Excelsior Rotterdam’s Derensili Sanches Fernandes in a multi-million-pound deal.

The Terriers are looking to finally put themselves back in the Championship after two disappointing seasons and have new management following the permanent appointment of Martin Drury and Jon Stead to lead the team.

Now, according to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof of vi.nl, Town are on the brink of signing 25-year-old winger Derensili Sanches Fernandes from Excelsior Rotterdam for a reported fee in the millions.

The wide man, who had one year left on his deal at the Eredivisie side, had a fairly productive season with six goals and three assists to his name across 33 appearances in the top flight.

Huddersfield have already recruited from the Kralingers in this window, with Ilias Bronkhorst heading to West Yorkshire on a free transfer, with another former player in the form of Radinio Balker also at the club.

Sanches Fernandes represented Excelsior for the past three seasons since his arrival from FC Utrecht, and racked up over 100 appearances, including a stellar campaign with 20 goal contributions to help the club win automatic promotion to the Eredivisie.

A winger has been on the agenda for Town this summer, having briefly pursued Colchester United’s Kyreece Lisbie prior to his move to Reading last month.

Terriers Secure Much-Needed Option

One issue for Huddersfield Town heading into this window was strengthening their wide options, meaning that this deal for Derensili Sanches Fernandes will do a lot to alleviate those worries.

While he is an unproven quantity in England, he will certainly have a lot of help with adapting to life in Yorkshire with Ilias Bronkhorst, Radinio Balker and another fellow Dutchman in Ruben Roosken already at the club.

With Cameron Ashia set to earn a promotion following the exit of Mickel Miller over the summer, Town will feel they have sufficient quality in their wide areas to support Ashley Fletcher and Bojan Radulovic this season.

However, with just Marcus Harness as the cover as it stands, adding one more option may be critical to see them through the campaign; otherwise, a formation change may be on the cards due to injury.
