Former Shrewsbury Town head coach Matt Taylor has secured a return to academy football with a short-term move to Norwich City.

The 44-year-old will work with the club’s Under-18s until the end of the season, bringing senior managerial experience back into a development environment. He will assist with the Canaries’ Under-18 set-up, working alongside existing academy staff at Colney as the club continues to strengthen their youth pathway.

His most recent EFL appointment was at Shrewsbury, and he also managed Walsall. His most recent senior role in the dugout was at Solihull Moors in the National League.

Taylor’s coaching career began following his retirement from playing in 2019. After a 20-year professional career that produced 658 league appearances and 84 goals, including more than 320 outings in the Premier League, he stepped into a role leading Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-18s. That period proved formative.

Reflecting on that spell, Taylor previously said:

“My first year at Spurs was an eventful one for the first team. Mauricio Pochettino was sacked early on, so I didn’t get to spend too much time with him, but Jose Mourinho came in. He was fantastic to all the academy coaches.

“He would always give us lots of detailed feedback on the players who went over to train with the first team, and he was more than happy for any of us to go over and watch him and his staff taking sessions.”

That exposure to elite first-team standards clearly shaped his thinking as a coach, particularly in understanding how academy players transition into senior football.

He added further insight into how that environment influenced his development:

“I worked closely with Ryan Mason, which was great for my development. He understood what it took to be a Tottenham player, because he’d been there and done it.

“I’d learned so much at Spurs. Not just about coaching, but also about interacting with players and developing them in certain ways.

“What does this player need for League Two? How can we help this player step up an age group?”

Those questions underline the value Norwich are likely seeking, a coach who understands both the tactical demands of the senior game and the incremental development required at youth level.

Since leaving Tottenham, Taylor moved into senior management with Walsall in 2021 before taking charge of Shrewsbury Town in June 2023. His tenure at Shrewsbury ended in January 2024 following a difficult run of results, and subsequent spells at Wealdstone and Solihull Moors brought mixed fortunes in the National League.

Now, he returns to a structure focused on progression rather than results.

Calculated short-term move

For Norwich City, the appointment feels calculated. Bringing in a former Shrewsbury Town boss with recent senior experience offers academy players exposure to someone who understands the pressures awaiting them beyond youth football. For Taylor, it may represent a timely recalibration.

After a turbulent period in management, this short-term academy role offers stability and the chance to rebuild momentum in an environment where development, not league position, is the primary measure of success.
